The Sunshine Coast Regional District's (SCRD) draft resolution for its new solid waste management plan is getting closer to implementation.

At its Feb. 15 meeting, Gibsons council approved the draft in principle, subject to: further public consultation; evaluation of financial implications; development of an equitable service delivery model; and establishment of a technical implementation committee with representation from all participants.

Mayor Barry Janyk said the biggest concern of the project is financial.

"So the position of council is to move slowly and incrementally - the ultimate goal being the reduction of landfill waste to zero," Janyk said.

Homelessness

Council discussed the impact of the homelessness outreach project and its grant funding. Coun. LeeAnn Johnson said the project has helped approximately 50 people with temporary housing while also serving others with various social needs. Due to the success of this program, council approved a recommendation to write a letter of support to help the program receive funding past June.

Harbour plan

Council made special note to remind everyone of the harbour area master plan public meeting, taking place at the Gibsons Legion on Wednesday, Feb. 23, from 7 to 10 p.m. Council is looking forward to a strong community attendance in the first public look at and discussion of the proposed master plan.
