Daycare operator Evelyn Corlett of Elphinstone was in Victoria May 1 to receive a BC Achievement Foundation Community Award.

The honour for Corlett was announced in early April, and the presentation ceremony was held this week at Government House.

“As owner of a family-run daycare, Eve has significantly contributed to the quality of life for hundreds of people in the community, and created an extended family by bringing together people from diverse backgrounds,” the citation for Corlett’s award reads. “The essential service Eve provides has enabled many community members to continue to live and raise their family on the coast while handling the daily demands of work and family life.”

Powell River-Sunshine Coast MLA Nicholas Simons introduced Corlett and her husband Rob at the legislature before the ceremony.

“With them will be Gibsons town councillor Aleria Ladwig and her family, Gabe, Anabelle and Emaline. Aleria had nominated Eve, who was caregiver for her children as well as to hundreds of other children over the years at her family-run daycare – over 40 years,” Simons told the legislature. “So congratulations to Eve. Will the House join me in congratulating all the recipients of the community achievement awards.”

As well as running the daycare, the Corletts have been advocates for more provincial resources to support the specialized type of child care her business offers – 24/7 flexible care for parents who work shifts.
