Contest wants to see kids cook

Community nutritionist Meghan Molnar hopes the lure of prizes will help get students on the Coast interested in cooking.

This year the Better Together Hands-on Cook-off is reaching out to high school students with a new category calling for short videos from student chefs.

Students can pick a dish to make, take a short video of the effort and submit it to http://bettertogetherbc.ca/contest to win up $750 worth of Apple gift cards plus $500 cash for their school.

Molnar said she is promoting the contest locally to help encourage kids to cook.

"It's about getting kids to cook and know where their food comes from and just be excited about food really. It's just kind of a fun way to get them interested in food and cooking," she said, noting cooking is an important life skill to learn while you're young.

Better Together hopes the contest will bring the message to schools across B.C. that students who cook make healthier food choices.

"Research shows that kids who cook not only make healthier choices, but tend to eat together with family or friends, and with that, comes improved social behaviour and better school performance," Sydney Massey of Better Together said. "With this contest, we want to remind youth and all people in B.C. just how fun and powerful it is to cook together."

The contest runs through the month of May. Full contest rules can be found at http://bettertogetherbc.ca/contest.
