Community clean up tackles illegal dumping

The Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) is inviting all members of the community to participate in a "backroad trash bash" next Saturday, Sept. 28.

The event will focus on cleaning up illegal dumpsites from Port Mellon to Roberts Creek.

"Last year we removed 14 tonnes of garbage from backroads," said Beth Brooks, SCRD environmental technician. "Many of these dump sites continue to remain clean a year later."

In 2012, the event received an overwhelmingly positive response as more than 55 people gathered to clean up trash illegally dumped at remote locations. Volunteers included members of the ATV Club, employees from the Conservation Service, Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations, BC Parks staff and concerned residents. Materials collected included household garbage, couches and mattresses, metal and construction waste.

Last year, community volunteers were excited to participate in the Trash Bash event, but hope the need for backroad clean-up events is a temporary one. During this year's event, community volunteers will again work to relay the message that dumping trash in the woods is unacceptable.

"Some materials that are dumped can be disposed of for free under product stewardship programs, such as electronics, tires and household hazardous waste," Brooks added.

Volunteers are asked to meet at 11 a.m. at Eric Cardinall Hall, 930 Chamberlin Rd. in Gibsons. Registration includes a free lunch and a chance to win draw prizes.

For more information and to preregister, email [email protected] with Trash Bash in the subject line, or phone 604-885-6800, ext. 6484.
