For the second week in a row, the Sunshine Coast is reporting only one new case of COVID-19.

The B.C. Centre for Disease Control’s weekly count covers Nov. 28 to Dec. 4.

During the same time frame, the Howe Sound area reported 40 new cases, while Powell River had six – up from zero the previous week.

Serious COVID-19 infections in B.C. have been on the decline since early November, and hit new months-long lows on Dec. 8, when there were 224 people in B.C. hospitals with the virus and 2,874 active cases. Of those in hospitals, 77 are in intensive care units – the lowest such count since August 25. The province’s death toll, as of Dec. 8, is 2,369. Since the pandemic began, 97.6 per cent of British Columbians who had the virus have recovered.

The first report of vaccination for youth five to 11 years old is now available. As of Dec. 6, 15 per cent of Sunshine Coast residents that age had received their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.

Youth 12 to 17 have almost caught up to the 18 to 49 age category, with 84 per cent of both age groups having received their first dose. The adults remain in the lead with 79 per cent having had a second shot, while the 12- to 17-year-olds are at 78 per cent for their second jab.

Those 50 and older have a vaccination rate of 92 per cent for their first shot and 90 per cent for the second.

More Coasters have also received their third dose of the vaccine, with 52 per cent of those 70 and older getting their booster shot by Dec. 6.
