Two weeks after receiving several top provincial newspaper awards, Coast Reporter had been honoured at the national level.

On Thursday night, April 26, Coast Reporter picked up the top editorial page award in its circulation class (6,500 to 12,499) at the Canadian Community Newspaper Awards gala in Toronto.

Coast Reporter publisher Peter Kvarnstrom was on hand to accept the award on behalf of the newspaper.

Graphic designer Eric Pinfold also received a silver award for his Sunshine Coast Hearing ad at the 2012 Great Idea Awards announced earlier in April. The winning entries demonstrate the very best in newspaper marketing and promotion and showcase the impressive creativity of the industry.

School could go year-round for B.C. students

B.C. will eliminate the standard school calendar in 2013/14, giving individual districts the ability to offer their own "creative scheduling options" for the school year.

Education Minister George Abbott announced the changes as part of Bill 36, the School Amendment Act 2012, introduced in the legislature Thursday, April 26.

The Education Ministry will still set a minimum number of instructional hours for schools each year, but boards will have more autonomy and flexibility in setting their calendars.

Abbott's bill also proposes to let students mix online and traditional school classes in kindergarten through Grade 9. That option currently only exists for grades 10 to 12.

School boards will also be able to charge fees relating to the cost of offering international baccalaureate programs, according to the bill.
