Located north of Ebbtide Avenue on Wharf Street, the Sechelt Marsh is a great place to take the family for a walk or to feed the birds. There are wooded trails circling the marsh pond and benches for quiet relaxation. However, these trails became very narrow as trees and brush filled out the canopy and sides, and there was erosion on the west trail, caused in part by the large number of mallard ducks present in the marsh.
Enter the 2963 Seaforth Highlanders of Canada Army Cadet Corps, who organized a work party on Sunday, Sept. 26. Cadets cleaned up and widened the trail and transported and placed rocks to stop erosion near a popular duck feeding station. This was done with the support and direction of the Sunshine Coast Natural History Society that manages the marsh on a year-round basis. Swanson's Ready-Mix and Construction Aggregates supplied over five tons of rock, and M&M Mini Excavating and George Goudie trucked this rock to the site. Wade Fitzgerald moved the rock within the marsh with his bobcat and the brush was hauled away by the District of Sechelt. This was truly a community effort.
