New overpass improves safety

A new pedestrian overpass is now opened at the Horseshoe Bay terminal, which will improve safety for customers accessing the Horseshoe Bay Village.

According to B.C. Ferries, the pedestrian overpass spans above the vehicle holding compound, replacing the ground level crossing passengers use to visit the shops, restaurants and the park in Horseshoe Bay.

"Safety is enhanced with the new pedestrian overpass separating customers from the vehicular traffic," said Deborah Marshall, media spokesperson for B.C. Ferries. With the opening of the overpass, pedestrian access and egress for the terminal is through the foot passenger ticketing building. An elevator is available to access the pedestrian overpass for mobility-restricted customers. Customers are reminded to have a valid boarding pass or receipt for re-entry into the terminal.

Foot passengers travelling with pets, bicycles or kayaks will continue to access the terminal through the ground level village gate and will continue to board and disembark the vessels via the main car deck. Entry through the village gate will be restricted using a newly installed security feature that will require customers to use a unique PIN code available from the foot passenger ticket agent at the time of ticket purchase.

In addition to enhancing safety for customers, the new pedestrian overpass also improves the security of Horseshoe Bay terminal by restricting the use of the village gate, said Marshall.
