Michel Brule was sentenced May 22 to 18 months in prison and three years of probation after pleading guilty to charges stemming from two Roberts Creek residential fires.

Brule previously pled guilty to two counts of arson damaging property, four counts of arson in relation to inhabited property, theft over $5,000 and possession of stolen property over $5,000.

On March 8, crews with the Roberts Creek volunteer fire department were called out to a garage fire on Richards Road before receiving reports of another fire nearby on Kraus Road.

Witnesses said Brule had been living in the renovated garage on Kraus Road and that he intended to move out that week before setting the garage ablaze and escaping in a stolen pickup truck.

Police found Brule waiting for the Powell River ferry in a motel after they pinged his cell phone and managed to ascertain his location.

The fire required the work of 14 volunteers to extinguish and a large boat was also damaged.
