Nominations have closed for the B.C. Green Party leadership, and with the entry of Cam Brewer into the race on July 25, it will be a three-way contest.

Brewer, a Vancouver-based lawyer and teacher at Simon Fraser University, joins Sunshine Coast entrepreneur and 2017 Green candidate Kim Darwin and Sonia Furstenau, MLA for Cowichan Valley and the only sitting member in the leadership race.

“During the course of my career I have looked for opportunities to bring people together to solve problems in our communities,” said Brewer, whose legal practice focuses on environmental and Aboriginal law. “Bringing together diverse interests and collaborating across the political spectrum will help us break through partisan gridlock and the limitations of the Greens being perceived as a one-issue party.”

The COVID pandemic forced the Greens to suspended their leadership contest in March, but it resumed in early July

“I would like to officially welcome Cam, Kim and Sonia to this race,” said party chair Sat Harwood, in the July 29 release announcing the final slate of nominees. “It has been a long time coming. I am looking forward to a vibrant competition full of ideas, passion and vision.”

Interim Green leader Adam Olsen, the MLA for Saanich North and the Islands, marked the start of the official campaign period by saying, “Three exceptional individuals have come forward to offer members and supporters new direction and leadership. I offer my gratitude to them and their teams for serving our party and embodying the principle of participatory democracy.”

The party has a live debate planned for Sept. 1, with online and telephone voting, using a ranked ballot system, to run from Sept. 5 to 13.

The winner will be announced Sept. 14.
