Members of the Sechelt Nation will be voting for a new councillor next week with the announcement of Joyce Joe's resignation.

Unexpected health issues caused Joe to cut short her service on Band council. She was officially sworn in along with councillors Jordan Louie, Keith Julius and Jessie August on April 1, 2011. She handed in her resignation on March 12, 2012, just three weeks shy of serving a full year on council.

There are seven hopefuls for the now vacant Sechelt Nation Council seat including Andrew Johnson Jr., Melodie Pierre, Benedict F. Pierre, Christopher August, Richard Johnson, Ashley D. Joe and Willard R. Johnson, who were all nominated on March 12.

Advance polling will take place on March 25 from 2 to 6 p.m. at the health and social development offices. Regular polls will be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on March 31 in the same location.

The four-person Sechelt Nation Council is lead by Chief Garry Feschuk. The current council term will end in 2014.
