On May 19 at the Seaside Centre in Sechelt, Sunshine Coast Alternative School students "spoke out" at the school's third annual Alternative Voices arts celebration.

A delicious lunch was provided by the school's culinary arts program, followed by a spoken word performance. Students prepared for the event in May by attending creative journal writing workshops with writer Sandra Jeppesen and a lyric writing/music recording workshop with musician Steve Wright. Students were inspired by these events.

"The workshop was beneficial," commented participant Houston Krohman. "We extended our confidence in publicly sharing personal work and changing the way we think about and relate to writing."

Carol Lodewijk from the Gibsons Pathfinder program said, "I didn't think I was a writer like this. I'm very creative, and I didn't know it." This annual event allows students to share their visual art pieces from the year and to celebrate creativity through the written/spoken word.
