Saturday March 8 was International Women's day and communities were treated to a double celebration at Roberts Creek Hall.

First off was a potluck dinner and entertainment line-up hosted by the Sunshine Coast Labour Council. The hall was filled with scores of men, women and children sharing food, laughter and a sense of community. Some of the entertainers included Manjambira, the Knotty Dotters, Lynn Chapman and Lynn Johnstone and Adelene the Soul Poet. Later in the evening, there was a community dance organized by Sappho Circle. Organizers for both events said the fact International Women's Day fell on a Saturday this time, gave them a chance to offer a double event.

Important highlights of the potluck dinner was a tribute by Margot McKinley for her mother Barbara Bourne (1937 to 2007) who was always involved in helping at the potluck dinner. As well, Bourne was a teacher at the first alternative school in Canada and was an advocate for publicly funded/affordable daycare. The other event of the evening was a 50/50 draw with the money going to the Arrowhead Society. See our Coast Scene on page C13 for more from the event.
