A rezoning for 109 apartments on Shorncliffe Avenue passed third reading at District of Sechelt's Oct. 4 regular council meeting. The proposal is for rental apartments in two buildings beside the grounds of Rockwood Lodge.

The zoning is proposed to change from R4 (urban infill) to RM1 (residential multiple one). The bylaw sets height limits of 20 metres and five storeys on the building to the west and 17.5 metres and four storeys for the building to the east.

Coun. Dianne McLauchlan – the lone vote against third reading – commented that the two-phase development could be disruptive for Greenecourt residents and raised congestion, noise, steep slope and speculation concerns.

Coun. Darren Inkster raised the question of using the Rockwood Lodge’s upper parking lot for access to the development for the sake of safety for children at the neighbouring school.

Coun. Alton Toth said this is much-needed rental housing.

The public hearing held Sept. 6 saw no speakers or submissions for or against the proposal.

The next step for the rezoning is adoption.
