Young dancers and singers from Halfmoon Bay Performing Arts School put on their year end recital May 27.
They were scheduled to perform two days later at Halfmoon Bay Elementary School, but because of the labour dispute between teachers and provincial government, the school’s artistic director Elaine Hunter had to seek a last minute change of venue and move up the rehearsal schedule. It worked well — this year the kids had an opportunity to perform in a real theatre, the Heritage Playhouse.
The show opened with a creative circus routine that involved many of the musical theatre students. The little ones showed off their Macarena dance while the youngest ballet group, decked out in pink tutus, gave a delightful show.
Solo singers included Cadence Tuplin, Anika Kilroy, Celia Brand, a duet from William Blackmon and Sasha Kardos-Machado and the show-stopping Izabelle Stevens who let it rip on several tunes including a perky, animated version of Popular.
The year one and two jazz dancers donned cowgirl hats for their lively performance, and the year two and three ballet dancers had a few performers who displayed the feet, the lines and the posture that show promise for their future in dance.
Hunter told the audience that they would be performing again for free for the Halfmoon Bay school children on the following Monday. She also plans to host a dancing/singing camp for kids, Aug. 4 to 8. For information, contact [email protected]
