The Young Artist Award program was designed to encourage and support young artists on the Coast. Each participant submits three pieces of visual art they created outside the school environment. The works are juried by local artists and the winners are chosen based on use of imagination, originality, design elements, presentation and communication.

Artwork from every participant is represented in this exhibition. The winners in each of the four categories receive a certificate and a cash award at the ceremony on Nov. 26 at 1 p.m. at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre. Everyone is invited to attend to celebrate the artists participating.

Sunshine Coast Arts Council invited all Kindergarten to Grade 12 students on the Coast to submit a design of "My Favourite Bug" for the banners that will be hung on Cowrie Street next summer.

Every design will be displayed in the exhibition at the Gallery. The designers of the 19 entries selected will be presented with a certificate of appreciation and a T-shirt with their artwork printed on it at the Nov. 26 awards ceremony.

Since 1994, a group of Sunshine Coast Arts Council volunteers have organized the Sechelt Street Banner Project, from the call for entry to exhibiting the designs and selecting the ones volunteer artists paint on fabric pieces. In celebration of the young artists and to decorate the downtown core, the finished banners will hang on Cowrie Street in the summer of 2007. The Gallery at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre is located at Trail and Medusa and is open Wednesday to Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and 1 to 4 p.m. on Sundays.
