Next Saturday, March 28, the Sunshine Coast Music Society will promote two of the Coast’s finest small ensembles when the Whirlwind quintet and the Baroque and Blue Trio pool their musical talents for their first combined concert of music to showcase wind instruments.
Unique combinations in the wind quintet (bassoon, flute, clarinet, French horn and oboe) and trio (piano, flute/piccolo, percussion) will present music encompassing an eclectic selection of musical styles and composers spanning several centuries. These musicians are also familiar to Coast classical music audiences as long-term members of the Coast Symphony Orchestra.
Whirlwind was brought together by the late Allan Crane to be featured in the Sunshine Coast Music Society’s 2009 Festival of Wind Music. The ensemble has continued since that debut appearance with various engagements including appearing with the Suncoast Concert Band, the Music in the Landing series and Coast coffee houses.
Well-known locally for its strong ensemble playing, the Baroque and Blue Trio features contemporary classical and world music repertoire with representation from the composers Astor Piazzolla, Carlo Domeniconi, John Rutter and the Sunshine Coast’s own Celso Machado. In addition to these two established ensembles, other variations of wind instrumentation will feature a clarinet trio and a French horn duo.
Join these fine musicians on Saturday, March 28 at 7:30 p.m. at the Highland Centre (accessed at 657 Highland Road (at the junction of Highway 101 and Lower Road)).
Advance tickets are $15 adults/$5 students at Laedeli (Sunnycrest Mall), Gibsons and Strait Music, Sechelt.
