Stormy Cove

An unsolved murder in a remote fishing community in northern Newfoundland and a globe-trotting photographer from Vancouver are caught up in the dark mysteries of the tiny outport. Stormy Cove is a great read by international crime writer and local author Bernadette Calonego. She will read from her bestselling new novel on Wednesday, Jan. 24 at the Gibsons Library at 6 p.m. She will also share a slideshow about the life of the locals in northern Newfoundland, her home for half of the year. Calonego was born in Switzerland and grew up on the shores of Lake Lucerne. She went on to earn a teaching degree and later became a journalist. After several years working with Reuters news agency and a series of German language newspapers, she moved to Canada and began writing fiction. As a foreign correspondent, she has published stories in Vogue, GEO, and SZ Magazin. The event is free. To register, call the library at 604-886-2130.

Burger and Beer

The Coast Car Co-op offers their first ever Burger and Beer fundraiser at the 101 Brewhouse and Distillery (1009 Gibsons Way) on Thursday, Jan. 25 from 6 to 10 p.m. Enjoy an evening of great food and beverages, along with a silent auction and a live auction, too. Tickets for $25 include one of The 101’s burgers (vegetarian option available), and a glass of locally-brewed beer. Coast Car Co-op will provide designated driver services to or from the event, or take advantage of Share-There’s free ride-share service to offer or request a ride.

Lonesome Ace

The Lonesome Ace Stringband brings grit, skill and abandon to old-time, Appalachian folk songs and fiddle/banjo tunes. The members are Chris Coole on banjo, John Showman on fiddle and Max Heineman on bass. Remember them from the Foggy Hogtown Boys? Together these terrific musicians bring a deep respect for the roots of the music. This year will see the band release its third album, When the Sun Comes Up. This is old-time music for today’s old soul. Catch them on Sunday, Jan. 28 at 7:30 p.m. at the Heritage Playhouse in Gibsons. Tickets are $20 at the door, or online at lonesomeace.com
