The Sunshine Coast Music Society presents Homecoming 2012, a weekend of music from home town musicians.
Dora Brook, soprano, performs with Tom Kellough on piano on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the Heritage Playhouse in Gibsons. Brooks is a Chatelech Secondary School graduate who was studying at the Vancouver Academy of Music. Following graduation she is currently with the VAM Opera Studio production of Mozart's The Magic Flute.
On Sunday well known former choir leader Joe Hatherill returns to the Coast with Beth Woodland and Dave Klassen as the Dream-A-Littles at 2:30 p.m. at the Heritage Playhouse. Tickets for $15 ($5 child) for both events are at Laedeli in Gibsons, the Sechelt Visitors Centre or Bluewaters Books in Madeira Park.
Fretless tonight
Three of Canada's most decorated fiddle champions, who graduated from the Berklee College of Music in Boston, have hooked up with a Celtic cellist to form The Fretless, a string quartet that marries Celtic, folk and chamber music into a sound they call "rad trad."
The young artists play Celtic and Canadian-style folk music with the flawless precision of the classically trained musician. Their debut album, Waterbound, showcases their raw talent as folk musicians and the sophisticated composition and arrangement skills.Ivonne Hernandez and Trent Freeman first started racking up provincial fiddle championships in their teens. Saskatoon's Karrnnel Sawitsky is a four-time Saskatchewan fiddle champion.Cellist Eric Wright was classically trained and was a member of the Vermont All-State Orchestra and the New England Orchestra.They will perform along with Bad to the Bow tonight (Friday), at St. Bart's Church Hall in Gibsons at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available at the door.
Blakey premiere
The Artists in Our MidstSeries presents Nicola Blakey and a premiere showing of her painting, prints and cards.The show opens at St. Hilda's Anglican Church, in Sechelt on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
The artist came to Roberts Creek from England 20 years ago, and brought with her a continuing interest in the standing stones and monoliths of that country.Some elements appear in her art. She has always been fascinated by the birds of the Sunshine Coast, especially the ravens. She loves the ancient legends and Native American tales, and aspects of this magical bird appear frequently in her work. Blakey's show opens in conjunction with St. Hilda's Strawberry Tea. Come talk with her about her work - and stay for tea in the hall.
Egypt talk
Artist Roberta Mauel will give atalk on Egypt:The Arab Spring and Beyond on Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Gibsons Public Art Gallery. Mauel's apartment overlooked Tahir Square in Cairo where she lived during the recent revolution. Doors will open at 6:45 so people can have dessert and tea before the talk begins at 7. Mauel is showing her watercolour landscapes in the Eve Smart room at the gallery until July 16.

Paddle open house
Pedals and Paddles will host an open house and community festival on Saturday at their new location at 7425 Sechelt Inlet Rd. in Tuwanek at the Jackson Brothers heritage-logging site. There will be free demos of mountain biking and paddle boards, a lunch for community visitors, a boat launch and lounge chairs for relaxing with a borrowed book. All are welcome. New season
Music in the Landing, now in its 10th year,will present their first free show of the season in Gibsonson Sunday, noon to 2 p.m.
The community youth fiddle group, Bad to the Bow,led by Chelsea Sleep, will play next to the Gibsons Sunday Market on the Sundial Stage and are ready to fill your afternoon with music. If you don't have one already, this will be a chance for you to purchase their brand new CD.
Collins tour
Andrew Collins, the 2012 Juno nominee for Instrumental Album of the Year, Cats and Dogs, will be coming to Gibsons to St. Bart's Church on Tuesday, June 26 at 8 p.m. As one of Canada's top acoustic innovators, his latest solo offering boasts 10 original compositions and demonstrates his versatility as producer, engineer and multi-instrumentalist, with performances on mandolin, guitar, fiddle, mandola and mandocello. Collins is a founding member of Toronto's Foggy Hogtown Boys. Tickets are $15 at the door.
Fibreworks
A four-day workshop with Catherine Nicholls, Exploring the Natural World, takes place June 25 to 28 at Fibreworks Gallery and Studio. Using the natural world as the source of inspiration, participants will experiment on fabric to recreate and interpret nature's wide range of textures and colours.Students will then be guided through the process of developing their own original composition, pattern and fibre art masterpiece.

Dangerous band
Acid rock comes to the Coast. Psychic Tuberculosis is a dangerous bandhailing from Vancouver and Victoria bringing anall-out assault of noise, confusion and volume. Also on this eclectic bill of music is electronics whiz Luc Van Wheelden from Amsterdam, Chris Rzepa on cello from Vancouver, Jon Vaughn from Saskatoon, and a special electronics set by local musicians Steve Weave and Giorgio Magnanensi known as Giostevo.
The event is on Friday, June 29, at Sound Studio in Sechelt located at 5536 Wharf Ave. Tickets are $10 at the door, and doors are at 7 p.m. No minors please. The following day, June 30, Van Wheelden will hold an all-agescircuit-bending workshop - the art of transforming battery operated kids' toys into alien instruments. Buskers wanted
Gibsons Sunday Market is looking for buskers to perform every Sun-day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., all through the summer.
Interested musicians can simply show up at the market, talk to either Dave Philley or Maria, and be given a time when they can perform.
