The Gibsons Live Poets Society hosts its inaugural Gibsons Poetry Night this Friday at 7 p.m. at Wheatberries Bakery/Bistro, 818 Gibsons Way. Featured readers include published Gibsons poets Eilis Carpentier, Jacqueline Hoekstra and Susan Telfer, and they will begin with an open microphone.
Open mike readers must sign up at the door at 7 and pay $2; a maximum of six will be admitted and each will have five minutes. Admissionfor the audience is by donation. This event is a fundraiser for the Gibsons Live Poets Society.
Music in Gibsons
Music in the Landing hosted very large crowds last weekend.
This Friday night, they continue from 7 to 8 p.m. in the gazebo on the wharf in Gibsons with the blues, pop and jazz tunes of vocalist Verna Chan accompanied by Paul Steenhuis on guitar.
On Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. John Tenbear Thompson, a solo modern one-man band, will entertain at Pioneer Square followed at 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. by fiddle pals Maya Broeke and Esme McLaughlin Brooks at the Pink House next to Leo's.
Saturday evening in Winegarden Parkwill see another double bill with singer Baili Clarke taking the first set at 7 p.m. followed by singer/songwriter Charlotte Wrinch and her band of Joe Stanton, John Paulin and John Rule.
Sunday is a very special event as Mimosa returns to the Sundial Stage next to the Sunday Market. They create a cabaret on the street with tunes from Parisian to Latin swing.
Music in the Landing will take a break for Sea Cavalcade weekend (July 28 and 29) and return Aug. 3.
Two plays
The Showcase of the Performing Arts continues at the Heritage Playhouse in Gibsons with the final two performances of Driftwood Players' production of two Woody Allen plays on July 20 and 21. Call 604-886-8998 for ticket availability.
Homecoming
Seven artists, whose work has been influenced by the Sunshine Coast and who vary from 20 to 80 years of age, will come together to bring a rich and textured show to the Gibsons Public Art Gallery.
A mix of painting, video, photography and computer images modified with paint and collage combine to offer the viewer a fresh and exciting experience. The show runs from July 19 to Aug. 20 and a reception is on Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the gallery. All are invited. See www.gibsonspublicartgallery.ca for more.
Blues show
On Saturday an amazing blues group from Vancouver is coming to play at Gibsons Legion: Harpdog Brown and the Blood Hounds, from 8 p.m. to midnight. Cover charge is $8 for members, $10 for non-members.
Mandala
The annual mandala painting at the Roberts Creek pier is expected to begin this week and continue for the next few days or as long as it takes - weather permitting. Painters are always welcome.
Art classes
Children's art classes at the Gibsons Public Art Gallery take place from July 23 to 27 for ages five to eight from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. and then ages nine to 12 from 10:45 to noon. The price is $30 for the week.See www.gibsonspublicartgallery.ca for more details.
Poetry in Sechelt
On Tuesday, July 24, The Sound in Sechelt welcomes back Ottawa-based poet Brandon Wint with special guest Jillian Christmaswhowill be joined by singer and former Canadian Idol finalist Chelsea D.E. Johnson.
Winthas been part of two Canadian Festival of Spoken Word championship teams, has performed poetry for diverse audiences,and has been exposed to many styles, many ways of relating and different artistic aesthetics. He has done more than 80 performances solo and as part of The Recipe Poetry Troupe, and has been a champion of the monthly Capital Slam competition in Ottawa.
The evening will begin with an open mike for local poets to share their work. Doors open at 7 p.m., show at 8. Tickets are $10 at the door.
Dance school
Intensive summer ballet classes begin this week for students of dancers David and Kathleen Holmes. The first week will take place in Gibsons and students will present a showcase of some class work plus variations from La Bayadere at Dominique's Dance Studio (near Kenmac on Gibsons Way) on Friday, July 27 at 6:45 p.m. The public is welcome to sit in on the showcase event.
