George and Charlotte Gibson Day celebrates coastal heritage on Saturday, May 23 from noon to 3 p.m. at Sun shine Coast Museum and Archives in Gibsons. This year’s celebration will feature fun activities for the whole family including a community photo-booth, the official exhibit opening of The Past is Present (an interactive photograph exhibit), and local historical vignettes from Driftwood Players theatre. There will also be a traditional English tea luncheon and refreshments by donation. New this year, local historian Dale Peterson will offer a historical walking tour of Gibson’s Landing leaving from the Visitor Centre at 11 a.m. (rain or shine). The 90-minute tour is by donation. Tea with music
After 35 years the popular annual plant sale at Gibsons United Church will be transformed to a new spring fundraiser, the Spring Tea and Bake Sale, on Saturday, May 23. It includes musical interludes by Suncoast Phoenix Community Choir featuring Sara Douglas. There will be tea with goodies, music, baking and book sale tables. Join the crowd and bring a friend. It runs from 2 to 4 p.m. at Gibsons United Church, 724 Trueman Road. Tickets are $7 at the door.
Coast Modern
This is the last weekend for Coast Modern, the design show at the Gibsons Public Art Gallery featuring 15 local artists. See it before May 24.
Expressive arts
Exploring Expressive Arts for Self Care and Stress Reduction is a workshop with Shelley Harrison Rae, certified expressive arts therapist. Absolutely no arts experience is necessary. The intention is not to produce fine art but to explore the possibilities that the arts can bring to light. Learn simple tools for stress reduction, experience self-expression without judgment and practise a variety of expressive arts exercises. It runs from 10 a.m. to noon on May 23. Poetry
Sunday, May 24 is the last event in the Spring Poetry Festival. Celebrate spoken word and music with local poets and musicians from 1 to 5 p.m. Admission is by donation at the Creek Gallery (behind the Gumboot Restaurant) in Roberts Creek. Contact Jane at 604-885-8450 for more.

On Wednesday, May 27 the Gibsons & District Public Library presents Kara Stanley with a reading from her book Fallen: A Trauma, a Marriage, and the Transformative Power of Music at 6 p.m. at the library. The event includes a book signing and music by Simon Paradis and Joe Stanton. (See photo on page 54.)
A Cappella and choir
Voices in Motion: A Cappella Strait and Choralations Children’s Choir perform on Friday, May 29 at 7 p.m. at the Living Faith Lutheran Church in Davis Bay and again on Saturday, May 30 at 7 p.m. at the Highland Centre, Gibsons. Cost is adults: $15, and students/seniors: $12. Children under 12 are free. Tickets are at the Sechelt Visitor Centre, Gaia’s Fair Trade, and at the door.
This spring concert will feature the many delightful sounds our voices can make, in harmony and in fun. Voices in Motion features modern and traditional folk-rooted choral pieces. Both groups are directed by Janice Brunson.
Coffee House
The last Artesia Coffee House of the season will be held Friday, May 29 at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre in Sechelt. Opening the night will be a young vocal duo with Molly Kennedy on accordion and Kale Tivy, banjo. Second up will be singer/songwriter/playwright David King with original story, song and spoken word.
After the break Heavy Mellow will entertain with Susann Richter, vocals/keys, Ray Fulber, bass, Steven Jack, vocals/harmonica, and Matt Watson, guitar/vocals. This group is a perfect closing of the 12th season of the Coast Cultural Alliance Coffee House. A new open mike night starts up in Gibsons on the last Friday of every month, beginning May 29 at MORE Cafe and Bakeshop at Sunnycrest Mall, Gibsons from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. It will be hosted by TEDx speaker Adelene da Soul Poet. She invites the young, the old and the brave. All are welcome to test out that new poem, rant or story. The hope is that enough poets will come out every month, that in 2016 they will have a slam team to compete in the Canadian Spoken Word Festival. MORE owners are hoping to add to the vibrant poetry and spoken word scene. Check with Leslie at MORE to sign up.
Music Makers
The Music Makers will host their Big Night Out on May 30 at the Sechelt Legion Hall at 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 7. The show features the adult choir, Guitar Gang, Reflections Women’s Choir, Ashley Hautala, Definitely Diva and Reg and Lynne. Tickets are on sale now for $20 at Seaside Centre, Gaia’s Fair Trade or through choir members.
