The artist who asked to "Play Me a Rock 'n' Roll Song" is coming to Sechelt. Valdy has two Juno Awards (country male vocalist and folksinger) and seven Juno nominations. His latest CD, Read Between the Lines (2012), reveals the Saltspring Island artist's long-standing respect for the land, as well as his passion for environmental stewardship, world peace, literacy and the abolition of poverty and hunger. GPAG show
The next show at the Gibsons Public Art Gallery is Kaleidoscope, with work by the Grainge Family and a small retrospective of the late Patricia Logie's paintings. It opened Sept. 5 and runs to Oct. 7. The artists' reception is this Saturday, Sept. 7, from 2 to 4 p.m. All are invited.
Last Night
The Last Night of the Proms comes by satellite to Raven's Cry Theatre in Sechelt this Sunday, Sept. 8, at 2 p.m.
It begins with a celebratory new work by Anna Clyne and includes a rare performance of Britten's 1967 overture for chorus and orchestra, The Building of the House, a touch of Broadway magic. Marin Alsop takes charge of her first Last Night.Nigel Kennedy and Joyce DiDonato are the star soloists in a three-hour, 10-minute program that picks up sea-faring themes from Bantock and George Lloyd and includes a transatlantic flavour. Bring your flag and join in the fun.

The Closet
The Sunshine Coast Film Society opens their fall season with a French comedy, The Closet, on Sept. 9 in Gibsons at 7:30 p.m. at the Heritage Playhouse and again on Sept. 15 at 2 p.m. in Sechelt at the Seniors Activity Centre. Bad to the Bow
Following their terrific performance at the Heritage Playhouse last week, Bad to the Bow, the teen fiddle group, played at the Pacific National Exhibition, after Dal Richards and his Orchestra. After six years of performing on the smaller community stage at the PNE, this year they were invited to play on the larger stage in the centre of the fairgrounds, and by all reports they looked and sounded fantastic. Despite torrential rainfall, the grouphad a splendid time.

Gerri Hills builds her poignantly funny one-woman show; Ted and Gayle MacDonald will support her with Métis fiddle and dance. Sean Blenkinsop, co-director of Simon Fraser University's Imaginative Education Research Group, reads "natural lyric essays," which have arisen from his travels in Europe and on the Pacific Crest Trail.Organizer Roche lurks about the premises all evening in an amusing manner.

Hula
During last month's series of demonstrations at the GPAG, Dhyana Bartkow danced the traditional Hawaiian hula along with Donna Schmirler and two Loma Loma (bodywork) practitioners. The audience joined in to learn the art of this lovely dance. Bartkow teaches beginners' hula dance on Tuesdays at 3:30 p.m. starting Sept. 10 at her studio in Gibsons.
