Don't miss two great performances tonight (Friday) and Saturday at the Sechelt Festival of the Arts.
Tonight's main stage showcase focuses on art and environment. Hosted by the Green Man, it features dancer Sylvain Brochu, Nir Blu and other collaborative events.
Saturday's show is Tapestry, hosted by spoken word artist Dave Hallstead and featuring world music, big band, dance and a live painting onstage from artist Mardi Ahmed. Tickets are $20 ($12 for students and seniors) and they take place at the Raven's Cry Theatre in Sechelt at 8 p.m. each night. See www.secheltfestivalofthearts.com for more.
Rise up and Crawl
The major art event of the year takes place this weekend: the Art Crawl -108 galleries and studios open their doors.
Here are a few items received too late for last week's article: Artworks Gallery and Framing in Gibsons hosts an event this evening, Friday, from 6 to 7 p.m. with an abstract art painting demonstration from Donna Swain. Stop in at 1161 Highway 101 to visit.
Pay a visit to John Conway's studio in Davis Bay. As a Canadian sculptor and bed-maker, he creates sculpted beds from driftwood, using maple, cedar and oak. His custom-made beds can be seen along with original music by Jill Conway at 4648 Whitaker Rd. during the Crawl.
At Fibre Works Studio and Gallery near Madeira Park, artists will be holding a variety of fibre art techniques demonstrations, including spinning, felting and dyeing.
At Goldmoss Gallery in Roberts Creek, Lee and Bon Roberts will showcase nine artists with 45 works on canvas, paper and multi-media.
Ines Tancre is showing for the first time on the Coast and other rarely seen Coast artists such as Donna Balma and R.B. Wainwright will have their works on show.
Pat Collier's home and studio in Gibsons will be open any time between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.All her realistic paintings are for sale along with cards and other artsy gift items.

Fresh Gala
Fresh from the Coast in Sechelt is hosting a gala opening for this weekend's Art Crawl with an artist's receptionfor new works by José Ventura. Born in El Salvador and recently settled on the Coast, the artist expresses himself in a variety of media, all of which will be represented in the show. Local musician Joe Stanton will be performing. Join them tonight, Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. at 5721 Cowrie St. in Sechelt. Fresh will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday for the Art Crawl.
Mimosa
The quartet of talented musicians Mimosa is playing at the Gumboot Café in Roberts Creek tonight, Friday, at 8 p.m. and yes, Anna Lumiere is part of that group.
She modestly left her name out of the group's description last week but will be there on keyboards and left-hand bass.
Poetry reading?
The Gibsons Live Poets Society presents Gillian Wigmore atWheatberries Bakery/Bistro this Saturday at 7 p.m. This reading is sponsored by Canada Council for the Arts and is free tothe public.
Wigmore's poetry book, soft geography, (Caitlin, 2007) won the 2008 ReLit Award and was short-listed for the Dorothy Livesay Poetry Prize.Her work has been anthologized and published widely in literaryjournals.
Doc's Side
Join Dr. Eric Paetkau as he launches his memoir, The Doc's Side: Tales of a Sunshine Coast Doctor (Harbour Publishing).
Paetkau will be at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre on Wednesday, Oct. 26, at 7 p.m. sharing the stories that sprung from a career in which he witnessed miraculous outcomes, tragedies and unusual situations - told in animated stories of operating a practice in our maritime community.
Coffeehouse
TheArtesia Coffeehouse runs Friday, Oct. 28, at the Arts Centre in Sechelt from 8 to 10:30 p.m.
October is all about vocals as the SASSPenders from Pender Harbourcome to Sechelt with combinations of duets, trios and soloists. And Sokole, a local women's group, will be singing village folk songs from the Balkans - a night of delicious harmony. Doors open at 7 p.m.; come early and enjoy treats by Trish. Tickets are at the door.
Entertainment Society?
After George Grafton's successful Night of Nostal-gia, the next eventfor the Suncoast Harmony Enter-tainment Society is an evening of Scotchwhisky tasting and a kitchen ceilidh at the Kinsmen Hall in DougallPark on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 7 p.m.

Gubby glory
Harbour Publishing is pleased to announce that Fishing with Gubby by Sunshine Coast authors Kim La Fave and Gary Kent, has received a Governor General's Literary Award nomination in the category of children's literature-illustration. This unique book about a West Coast salmon fisherman has already garnered numerous award nominations, including the Amelia Frances Howard-Gibbon Illustrator's Award, a Joe Shuster Award and the Bill Duthie Book-sellers' Choice Award for best book published in B.C.
