Hula Master
Esteemed Hawaiian emissary and hula master, Puna Kalama Dawson, will be giving a public presentation at Davis Bay Hall (5123 Davis Bay Road) on Saturday, May 28 from 7-9 p.m. As a descendant of Queen Kalama and Hawaiian kahunas, Puna has embraced her responsibility to perpetuate Hawaiian culture. She is a Kumu Hula (a master teacher) of traditional Hawaiian dance, a recording artist and composer who is also a community leader, activist and spiritual leader. She travels the world to share Hawaiian culture and the message of aloha (universal love and peace). This visit is to further her 16-year mentoring in Kauai of Dhyana Bartkow, leader and teacher of our local hula troupe, Keia Papa Kaua. Hula is originally a dance of communion with the creative force, a lot more than just kitschy wiggle and cellophane skirts. Tickets are available at the door. A sliding scale donation of $15/20 is suggested to help pay travel expenses. For more, phone Dhyana at 604-886-9737, or email [email protected].
