Whether you are waving, crawling or strolling, the concept of inviting the public to journey through an area's art studios and galleries has become a popular way to see what's on offer from local artisans.
The third annual Gib-sons Landing Art Stroll runs from Aug. 10 to 13, taking in 11 different venues all within a short walking distance of each other.
"This year we wanted to make it more about the creative scene," said organizer Manon Staiger. "Certainly visual arts are the focus, but we want to incorporate music and cuisine."
Staiger had only just moved to the Coast from Campbell River when she volunteered to co-ordinate this year's effort based on her previous experience as curator of that town's gallery. She's clearly excited by the way all those involved have co-operated to make it a better experience. For example, a group of artists at the tiny Landing Gallery will spill across the street to a storefront on loan by a sponsor, to hold the intriguingly titled three-day event, "We've Got Big Ones (and other sizes too)."
Westwind Gallery, The Waltzing Whippet and Daffadowndilly Gallery are all involved. Joining the stroll this year is the Sa Boothroyd Gallery at the end of the dock, Starlet Vintage (in its new location, 459 Marine Dr.), Gypsy Cove, The Blackberry Shop & Friends, and the community's newest member, The Wheel Gallery, in Molly's Lane. Many of them will feature work on display during this event only.
Don't miss Nancy Hache's Wild Women collection at the Waltzing Whippet or a cut paper art demonstration from James Kobierski at Starlet Vintage on Friday, Aug. 12, from 2 to 4 p.m.
Pick up a brochure and map listing all the venues and their hours of operation on opening night, Wednesday, Aug. 10, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Gibsons Public Art Gallery (GPAG). Everyone is welcome to attend opening night to see the latest show by artist Megan Dulcie Dill and enjoy refreshments from Truffles Café.
Those who visit each gallery or shop listed will have their brochure stamped to enter a draw for donated prizes from Dean Van't Schip, Sa Boothroyd, Sushi Bar nagomi and Leo's Tapas and Grill.
Musical events include Jessica Hart on guitar at the Black Bean Café on Saturday morning (11 a.m. to 1 p.m.), as well as the Music in the Landing concert series at the government wharf gazebo, Pioneer Square and Winegarden Park on Friday and Saturday.
Some of the area's eateries will offer specials. Along with its daily dishes, Truffles will offer afternoon tea from 3 to 5 p.m. each day at a special price for Art Stroll visitors. Reservations are required.
Stop in at Leo's to sample an artisan's picnic basket appetizer created just for this event, as well as a selection of mini-dessert specials. Still hungry? Sushi, fish and chips and beverages can be found at Sushi Bar nagomi, Codfathers, Gramma's Pub and The Galley.
If you can't make the opening reception at GPAG on Aug. 10 then you can start at any of the above locations over the following days. For more information check out the gallery's website at www.gibsonspublicartgallery.ca.
