The Rolston String Quartet, first prize winner of the 2016 Banff International String Quartet Competition, make their Coast Recital Society (CRS) debut this Sunday afternoon, Feb. 18 at the Raven’s Cry Theatre at 2:30 p.m. CRS artistic director Frances Heinsheimer Wainwright will host a pre-concert chat with the musicians at 1:30 p.m.

The Rolston String Quartet has quickly established an international reputation as one of the finest young quartets performing today. Members of the Quartet are Luri Lee, violin; Jeffrey Dyrda, violin; Hezekiah Leung, viola; and Jonathan Lo, cello.

A review in Musical Toronto noted: “They perform with a maturity and cohesion rivaling the best string quartets in the world.”

The Banff String Quartet competition is one of the world’s most prestigious string quartet competitions. On the heels of their Banff win, the Rolstons embarked upon a major tour, taking them to Germany, Italy, Austria, Canada, and United States. Highlights of their 2017-2018 season include appearances in such venues as the Smithsonian Institution and Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC; Koerner Hall at the Toronto Royal Conservatory of Music; and the Esterhazy Palace in Eisenstadt, Austria. The Rolston String Quartet is quartet-in-residence at the Yale School of Music. Notable collaborations for the ensemble include performances with renowned artists Andrés Díaz, Gilbert Kalish and Mark Morris. They have also worked with composers John Luther Adams and Brian Current.

The Rolston String Quartet was formed in the summer of 2013 during a chamber music residency at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity. They take their name from late Canadian violinist Thomas Rolston, the esteemed founder and longtime director of the Music and Sound Program at the Banff Centre.

For this Coast Recital Society concert, the Rolston String Quartet will perform works by Robert Schumann, R. Murray Schafer and Ludwig van Beethoven.
