SOPA launches

The eighth annual Showcase of the Performing Arts (SOPA) - a fundraiser for the Heritage Playhouse and a way to promote local performing arts - runs the first three weeks of July. Tonight, July 3, lovable Joe Stanton performs solo. Tickets are $15.

Tonight, July 3, lovable Joe Stanton performs solo. Tickets are $15. On Saturday an Evening of Dance presents the very best of DSdanse, Coast Academy of Dance and Dance Works. Tickets are $15.

On Sunday, July 5, Nikki Weber showcases The "Now" Generation 2009 ($15), and on Thursday, July 9, the witty team of Colleen Elson, Nest Lewis, Tim Anderson and David Short make us laugh with Comic Readings ($10).

The following week kicks off Friday, July 10, with a film night. Paris, Je T'Aime is a French drama anthology in which celebrated directors from around the world portray Paris in a way never before imagined ($10). All shows are at 8 p.m. Doors open at 7:30. Double show

Potter Laurie Rolland and boat-builder Larry Westlake will have a summer show and sale of their work in their garden July 4 and 5 daily from noon to 5 p.m. at 4676 Whitaker Rd., off Davis Bay Road in Sechelt. Rolland will exhibit work ranging from the small functional object to the sculptural as well as pieces designed for the garden. Westlake will display his finished boat designs as well as boat themed cards and prints.

In September Rolland's work will be part of the sixth Cheongju International Craft Biennale in South Korea. This will be the third piece of hers to be selected and shown in that country.

In June of this year, Westlake completed another successful crossing of the Strait of Georgia rowing from Davis Bay to Nanaimo as he continues to promote heritage boats. Showroom is open by appointment, so call 604-885-0744.

Music in the Landing

Diana Halter on harp will be joined by Allannah Dow on cello for an enchanting evening of music in the gazebo at the end of the Gibsons wharf tonight (Friday) from 7 to 8 p.m.

On Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Pioneer Square, you can hear outstanding musicians Blaine Dunaway, violin/trumpet, and John Paulin with vocals and guitar. Home grown songstress Skye Wallace will be busking in front of the Pink House from 1:30 to 3:30, and from 7 to 9 the high energy rockin' ska band BOAB will be playing in Winegarden Park.

Sunday at the Sundial Stage, next to the Sunday Market, listen to local troubadour Kevin Crofton, vocals/guitars, and Graham Walker on drums while you soak up the sights and sounds of The Landing in summer.

Fibreworks

Fibreworks Gallery in Garden Bay will open its latest exhibition of work Containers, a group exhibit, on Saturday, July 4 at a reception from 2 to 4 p.m. Who knows what the crafted containers will hold? Ceramic Show

Ceramics on the Edge runs from July 8 to 29 at the Doris Crowston Gallery, at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre in Sechelt with an opening reception on Wednesday, July 8 at 7 p.m. Eighteen great Coast ceramic artists are in this juried show - 10 established and eight emerging - and the emphasis is on new and innovative work, pushing the boundaries for this first annual show.

Plein Air Show

Local artist Brian Romer is taking part in a show at the Ferry Building Gallery in West Vancouver that features other painting luminaries such as Robert Genn and Kiff Holland. The show, A Passion for Plein Air, runs until July 26 and some artists will be in attendance this Saturday, July 4 from 2 to 3 p.m.

Steve Wright

Local singer songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Steve Wright will perform a solo show on guitars, piano, and electronics on Saturday, July 11 at the Gumboot Cafe in Roberts Creek. He will be performing a career "current retrospective" celebrating 25 years of performance highlighting originals past and present, as well as inspired covers and improvisations. Also featured will be custom tailored videos for many of the songs starring local Sunshine Coast residents and images. In addition he will be accessing sounds, samples and effects through three foot volume pedals. The show begins at 8 p.m. and the suggested donation is $10 at the door.

101 Artist

The artist at 101 Office Supply in Sechelt this month is Robert R. Moore, known to many as a member of The Roving Artists.

He has been painting for many years and has developed a style that can embrace the figurative and the abstract in the same composition. For this show, he is exhibiting a selection of acrylics, most of them larger-scale wildlife and landscape studies. There is also a representative selection of his ?visionary compositions.
