Sing your heart out

Kids love to sing and act, and this musical theatre camp gives them the opportunity to do both.

Kids love to sing and act, and this musical theatre camp gives them the opportunity to do both.

Started last year by local music teacher Sara Douglas, Sing Your Heart Out Kids' Camp will practise and perform the music of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. The camp runs from July 29 to Aug. 2 at St. Hilda's Anglican Church in Sechelt.

Last year nearly 40 children came out to perform a mini version of Gilbert and Sullivan's The Pirates of Penzance. Amidst clashing swords, police hiding in the bushes to avoid pirates and a bevy of beautiful maidens at the seaside for the first time, there was some very fine singing and acting.

Douglas started the Sing Your Heart Out idea many years ago in North Vancouver, and now that her own children are old enough and have the performing bug, it just made sense for her to start this here on the Coast.

Douglas is also the director of the popular Sechelt summer choir, which will be performing Vivaldi's Gloria and Bach's Magnificat later this summer.

Most children are natural performers and all children are natural singers, given the opportunity. The music of Joseph is particularly fun for all because there is something for everyone - a 1920s style jazzy number, a country and western tune, a French cabaret song and even a terrific Calypso number.
