Showcasing youth

Art Beat

Plug in, spotlight youth and help raise funds for the Neil Falkner Outward Bound Memorial Legacy. Money raised will send two youth per year on life-changing Outward Bound Wilderness Journeys. This year local youth will be performing along with the popular British comedy team of James & Jamesy at 8 p.m. (doors open at 7:30) at Roberts Creek Hall this Saturday, April 18.

You can visit the online Silent Auction now at www.32auctions.com/NeilFalknerLegacy2015 to find great gifts and opportunities. Bid online and/or at the fundraiser then stay for the dance party. Tickets are at the door: youth under 18 pay $10, adults $20.

For a free event on that same afternoon join the crowd at Roberts Creek Hall from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. and find out what youth on the Coast are doing to make a difference. Adults and youth can visit tables/displays about youth involvement on the Coast. All are invited to participate in a round table discussion about our connection to the land, to community, and to self. Goodies will be on sale provided by the Gay/Straight Alliance from Chatelech Secondary School. For more information go to www.neilfalknerlegacy.ca.

Sechelt drama

Ever wonder what Sechelt was like prior to the Second World War? Come hear some entertaining and educational stories of the early Sechelt settlers performed by The Chair Actors, including voices from the Sechelt First Nation, this Friday, April 17 at 7 p.m. at St. John’s United Church in Davis Bay. The Chair Actors presented Restless Spirits at three performances last fall and left the community wanting more.

The script (abbreviated for Friday’s performance) consists of a series of verbal “snapshots” about Old Sechelt and some of its characters, reinforced by images from the Helen Dawe Collection in the Sechelt Archives. Eighteen chair actors play more than 30 characters from a script researched by Sechelt Archivist (and Chair Actor), Ann Watson, and dramatized by Louise Phillips with input from several cast members.  This special evening of Sechelt Tales & Descendant Reflections is sponsored by the Men’s Breakfast Group at St. John’s United Church who wanted to make the evening more memorable by offering an opportunity to interact with the descendants of some of the characters portrayed in the script.  Brown Brothers

Come on out and dance to the Brown Brothers appearing with the Unusual Suspects this Saturday, April 18 at 8 p.m. at the Gibsons Legion. Members $5, guests with members $10.

Playback

Tickets for the Rock n’ Roll night on Saturday, April 18 at the Seniors Centre in Sechelt will get you a great band called Playback, a cold buffet, raffle and a cash bar. Tickets are available at many stores in Sechelt or phone 604-740-3110. Funds raised go to a good cause, Flair on the Coast, helping people with cancer.

Reefer Madness

The historic, hysterical, original Reefer Madness movie is screening at the Raven’s Cry Theatre on Monday, April 20. Doors open at 4:20 p.m., tickets are $10 at the door, and the film is rated for all audiences.

This 1936 melodramatic propaganda film fueled over 75 years of fear-mongering that tried to convince us that “Satan’s Weed” (marijuana) would lead to addiction, violence, sexual depravity, a life of crime, murder and insanity. The melodramatic plot revolves around high-school students and siblings, Mary and Jimmy Lane, who are lured into a “reefer house,” smoke pot, and plummet down a spiraling path to a horrible tragedy. Today the movie is a cult classic, recognized as a failed attempt to manipulate a population with scare tactics and outright lies.

Young People’s Art

This year’s Young People’s Art Show at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre is coming soon.

The final act for the evening is Just Us, a popular acoustic / electric duo playing favourites with Michelle Morand, guitar/vocals and Dave Roughley, guitar/vocals.
