Shout Out

Art Beat

The Gibsons Public Art Gallery (GPAG) is shining a spotlight on youthful creativity during the sixth annual Young People’s Shout Out! Art Show, with an opening reception today, Friday, March 6, from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m.

This exhibition features the works of Sunshine Coast young people from the ages of two to 18. It promises to be a colourful, energized, thought-provoking romp.

Adding to the festivities will be a premiere dance performance choreographed by 16-year-old Audrée Hutchinson. The piece is playful, according to Hutchinson, “shouting her youth” to the Fall Out Boys Young Volcano.

GPAG has arranged to have art educator Laurel Sukkau available to mentor young artists for the reception. For more information about this and other programs, such as the Spring Break children’s art classes, visit www.gpag.ca or call 604-886-0531.

Musical sale

The Sunshine Coast Community Orchestra Association holds their annual fundraising garage sale this Saturday, March 7 at the Roberts Creek Hall from 9 to 11 a.m. Enjoy live music by the Suncoast Concert Band and SC Junior String Ensemble while you browse.

Downton fans

Driftwood Players and the Sunshine Coast Grandmothers and Grandothers once again present a Downton Abbey style afternoon tea and entertainment, similar to the popular event last September.

You will be pampered with delicious delicacies served by liveried footmen at your formal table. Following tea, you will be entertained by Driftwood Players with a fashion parade, scenes with your favorite characters, dances and music of the time. All profits will be shared between the Stephen Lewis Foundation and Driftwood Players’ future productions fund.

Driftwood and the Grandmothers present this Saturday, March 7, at 2 p.m. at Sunshine Coast Golf and Country Club and next Saturday, March 14, 2 p.m. at Sunshine Coast Botanical Garden. A third event is scheduled for Saturday, March 21 at Gibsons United Church. Tickets are at the Blackberry Shop and Laedeli, Gibsons; SC Golf Club; Sechelt Visitor Centre and Earth Fair in Madeira Park.

Vocal group

Vocal Intent, an a cappella singing ensemble, will perform a musical soiree,  A’round the Table, on Saturday, March 7 at 7 p.m. at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre in Sechelt.

Women’s Day

International Women’s Day this Sunday, March 8 at Roberts Creek Hall promises lots of entertainment for this day of celebration: Local Voices, the Knotty Dotters, Sokole, Baili Clark, Joan and Ted with guest speaker Lori Dixon. It’s free, organized by the Sunshine Coast Labour Council, but bring a potluck dish to share. Doors open at 5 p.m. All are welcome.

Applause for Caws

Mind of a Snail Shadow Theatre (a.k.a. Jessica Gabriel and Chloe Ziner) gave an outstanding performance of their innovative shadow show, Caws and Effect, at the Heritage Playhouse on Feb. 20. The two are wildly creative and used low tech overhead projectors, costumes, mime and cleverly timed artwork to tell a story about crows and their dreams.
