Sharing fibre riches

The opening reception will be at the gallery, 12887 Sunshine Coast Highway, this Saturday, Aug. 6, from 2 to 4 p.m. with the artist in attendance. Armed with nearly 100 metres of hand-dyed fabric, thought-provoking lyrics and mesmerizing music, Hergert embarked on a journey of exploration culminating in the new body of work inspired exclusively by Cat Stevens' ballads.

This weekend

Greener Than Thou and Local Anxiety, an evening of eco-comedy at the Heritage Playhouse, opens in Gibsons tonight, Aug. 5, and runs tomorrow, Aug. 6, at 8 p.m. Mark Leiren-Young's one man show is a comedy, and he, along with local performer Kevin Crofton, closes the show with a 40-minute Local Anxiety comedy duo set. Tickets are at the door and at the usual outlets.

Also, the Roving Artists will be showing their work at the Arts Building in Gibsons starting tonight (Friday) from 7 to 9 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

In Sechelt, the Festival of the Written Arts is underway at Rockwood, and nearby you will find the Arts Council's juried art and craft fair taking place over two days in Hackett Park.

Midsummer daydream

Park thy carriages at Sunnycrest Mall in Gibsons and enter the Woods Showcase portal for a Midsummer's Daydream live painting demonstration on Saturday starting at noon. A costumed Autumn Skye Morrison will demonstrate her painting talent forthee for free. Hear a heavenly Maureen Bodie play the harp and laugh with the angelic staff.

Mandala?painting

The Roberts Creek community mandala at the pier was delayed because of crazy weather. Painting will start Aug. 10 or 11.Join others in creating this very special community art. If you would like to donate to this project, call Rob at 604-886-8963.

Chamber music

The Pender Harbour Chamber Music Festival Aug. 19 to 21 is sold out, but you can always enjoy the free concert put on by the musicians on Friday, Aug. 19 at 2 p.m. Chamber Music Does Not Bite is a good introduction, and is suitable for children to attend. You'll have to get there early, as the Performance Centre in Madeira Park is small. While you're in the neighbourhood get a jump on the Pender Harbour Jazz Festival (www.phjazz.ca) that already has a great line-up for Sept. 16 to 18.

Art finalist

Pender Harbour artist Helen Broadfoot was recently chosen as a finalist at the Art Renewal Center's 2010/11 Salon. This is a site dedicated to the world's mostdistinguished realists and is a prestigious honour. Her oil painting, Dana, is displayed with the other finalists at www.artrenewal.org, click on "2010-2011 ARC Salon Winners Announced" and then "Finalists in the Figurative Category."

How to choose?

There's a multiplicity of festivals and events coming up on the Aug. 20 to 21 weekend: Deer Crossing the Art Farm is expanding its Synchronicity Festival with a carnival-like event in Shirley Macey Park in Gibsons, featuring live music, an outdoor rainforest circus, an artisans' and farmers' market, children's tent, art installations, food and wine.

The Pender Harbour Garlic and Music Festival runs that same weekend in the Lions Park with Valdy and a host of other musicians from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. See www.penderharbourgarlicfestival.ca for more information.

And on Saturday, Aug. 20, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Creek Daze and the Higgledy Piggledy Parade winds its way through Roberts Creek. For info about being a vendor at Creek Daze, contact [email protected] or call 604-741-5970.

Oh, and don't forget that Linwood House hosts their fifth annual Art Experience on Sunday, Aug. 21.

Sudoku art

Halfmoon Bay artist Ian MacLeod is showing a selection of digital prints based on the sudoku puzzle at the Gumboot Café throughout the month of August. These colourful sudoku representations are unusually soothing. Take a look.
