Carters and Cash

The Foggy Hogtown Boys salute the music of the Carter family and Johnny Cash. The Carter family had a profound impact on bluegrass, country, Southern gospel, pop and rock musicians as well as on the U.S. folk revival of the 1960s. Cash, who married into this “First Family of Country Music” in 1968, is widely considered one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century.

The Foggy Hogtown Boys have become a Canadian bluegrass and roots music institution. In Carters and Cash the band pays tribute to the music of the Carter family and Cash in their unique bluegrass and old-time style, on Tuesday, July 5 at the Roberts Creek Community Hall. Tickets are $20 at www.foggyhogtownboys.com  Showtime is 8 p.m. (doors at 7).

Art show

The Sunshine Coast Arts Council’s forthcoming exhibit at the Arts Centre is From There to Here, featuring the works of Lynda Manson, and Self, the works of Hawkfeather Peterson. The exhibit runs from July 6 to Aug. 7 with the opening reception on Wednesday, July 6 from 7 to 9 p.m. Manson is a designer and fibre artist turned painter who moved to the Sunshine Coast in 2009. In her exhibition, she ponders the beginnings of our existence. A series of large paintings progress in subject matter from nebulae found in the far reaches of outer space to aurora borealis in the outer atmosphere to skyscapes here on Earth.

Art has been a vital part of who Hawkfeather Peterson is for as long as she can remember. “The ability to express myself artistically has defined the person I am today.” Art is her meditation. In her exhibition, Hawkfeather explores what it means to “be”. Depictions of beautifully realistic body parts intertwine and flow with internal body structures, muscle and bone, organs and cells. For further information see www.sunshinecoastartscouncil.com  Gallery hours are Monday to Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, 1 to 4 p.m.

Two surface design artists living in Sechelt have been invited to show their work in The Foyer Gallery in Squamish for July. Both have shown their work at FibreWorks in Pender Harbour. The show is called Celebrating Texture with Constance Chapman, a textile artist who works with digital images on fabric embellished with pigments, hand or machine stitching and mounted on framed canvas. Sharon Roye’s encaustic pieces are digital imaging of the patinas of ignored beauty around us played off smooth colours caught in molten wax. The show in Squamish runs from July 6 to Aug. 2 with an opening reception July 10 from 2 to 4 p.m. They would love to see some faces from the Sunshine Coast.
