The Sunshine Coast Dance Society once again has offered a $500 scholarship to a local dancer wanting to further her studies in dance.
"This year we thought we would create an actual audition situation, with a master class to observe technical ability and musicality and participants to perform a three-minute solo, for performance and creativity," said dance society president Maggie Guzzi. "We were fortunate to have Caroline Farquhar teach the class, who will be performing in Laura Hicks eclectic piece Nosh and Stammer at next week's Dancing in the Edge series in Vancouver and who we hosted last week in an informal showing at the Heritage. It was wonderful for the girls to experience a class given by a professional dancer."
Tegan Jackson, Emilie Bland, Baylee Higgins and Richelle Wright from the Coast Academy of Dance participated.
"They were amazing to watch and gave it their all," Guzzi said. "In the end, and after much deliberation, the four adjudicators decided that Tegan would receive the scholarship."
When asked what she plans to do with the scholarship funds, she said, "I will be using my Dance Society scholarship to attend Kathy and David Holmes's dance camp at the Coast Academy of Dance in July and August of this summer."
The SCDS is in its 18th year as a non-profit society and is looking for new members and volunteers to join its dance loving community.
All are welcome, so come hear about upcoming shows and events. The society annual general meeting is this Saturday, July 9, at the Seaside Centre from 1 to 3 p.m.
