The Sunshine Coast Arts Council is proud to announce their next exhibit, Refraction: Queer Artists of the Sunshine Coast. Curated by Anna Nobile, this exhibit brings together eight talented and diverse artists. Painters Morley Baker, Marilyn Marshall and Lore Schmidts are joined by photographer Craig Cochrane, woodworker Sandra Corbett, exotic basket maker Kim Hadley, potter Shey Smith and textile artist Janet Tufnall.
The exhibit runs from June 1 to July 3 at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre, 5714 Medusa in Sechelt, with an opening reception on Wednesday, June 1 from 7 to 9 p.m.
The exhibit overlaps with the Sunshine Coast Pride Week, June 19 to 25, and as the name Refraction suggests, it is hoped that the show will “offer us a different view into the wide spectrum of human experience.” Curator Anna Nobile states: “We hope to share something of ourselves, of our experience of being who we are, so that we break down barriers, invite dialogue, get to know one another and create a unified, whole community comprised of individuals as unique as each colour of the rainbow.”
Three artist talks and demos will take place: June 4 at 1:30 p.m.: Take Your Best Shot with photographer Craig Cochrane; June 11 at 1:30 p.m.: A Stitch in Time with textile artist Janet Tufnall; and June 18 at 1:30 p.m.: Dream Weaver with basket maker Kim Hadley. See www.sunshinecoastartscouncil.com or Refraction’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/refractionsc for more.
Boobs
Caitlin Press has recently published an anthology titled Boobs: Women Explore What It Means to Have Breasts, and it’s been receiving a lot of attention from local readings and events. On Wednesday, June 1, the Gibsons Library is hosting three writers, Rebecca Hendry, Janine Alyson-Young and Sadie Johansen, for their readings from the anthology. Talewind Books will be on site to sell copies. The contributors will be telling stories from their life about getting to know a new city through breastfeeding, the fear that is finding a lump in one’s breast, and the desire to grow breasts despite being born in a male body. These stories are incredibly empowering and uplifting and include humorous outer linings and insights.
