Euclid’s Orchard
Please join Theresa Kishkan and her publisher Mona Fertig of Mother Tongue Publishing at the Sechelt Public Library on Friday, Sept. 8 at 7 p.m. for the launch of Euclid’s Orchard and Other Essays. In her new collection Kishkan unravels an intricately patterned algorithm of cross-species madrigal, horticulture and love. Opening with “Herakleitos on the Yalakom,” a turbulent homage to her father, and ending in “Euclid’s Orchard,” amidst bees and coyotes, her touchstones of natural history and family mythology are realigned and mortared with metaphysics and math. Her signature lyricism of place and home sings of her grandparents’ first homestead near Drumheller via an actual “Poignant Mountain” of her girlhood to her beloved home near Pender Harbour. Euclid’s Orchard will be for sale at the launch by Talewind Books following a short reading and opportunity for questions. Desserts and tea will be served, courtesy of the Library, Mother Tongue Publishing and the author.
Sarah and Sara
Sky Parallel is a musical project from Sarah Noni and Sara Fitzpatrick from the Sunshine Coast. They perform on Friday, Sept. 8 at 7:30 p.m. at the Heritage Playhouse, 662 North Road, Gibsons. Noni is a brilliant singer-songwriter with three solo albums out. Fitzpatrick is a dynamic fiddler and teacher. When the two found themselves neighbours and new moms, they struck up a friendship that also became Sky Parallel. Together, they’ve created a whole new batch of musical magic. Noni is a Canadian Folk Music Award winner and has been heard regularly on CBC Radio over the years since her debut in 2004. Her three previous solo albums are each gems in the Canadian folk and roots music collection. With a background in classical, traditional and jazz music, Fitzpatrick’s fiddle and violin work has taken her around the world with award-winning Canadian band Delhi 2 Dublin. When she’s not teaching the next generation of fiddlers, she’s the newest member of the award-winning Rakish Angles. See: www.facebook.com/skyparallelmusic
