This Friday night, Nov. 20, stop by Gibsons Public Art Gallery at 7 p.m. for music and poetry by local people all inspired by Joni Mitchell. On Saturday, Nov. 21 at 2 p.m. the initiator of this special tribute show, Pat Drope, will read her poem, Golden Troubador, and Sandy Wrightman will talk about Joni – Narrating Our Lives.
The gallery invites visitors to have fun by taking photos of themselves in the front seat of the big yellow taxi (Joni is larger than life in the back seat) and sending the selfies to Facebook or Twitter or to the Gallery ([email protected]).
Film
The SC Film Society presents The Edge of Heaven, a German/Turkish/Italian drama by director Faith Akin (English subtitles). After Ali accidentally kills a prostitute, his son leaves Germany to search for the woman’s adult daughter in Istanbul. Winner of more than 30 film awards, including best screenplay at Cannes, this is a complex and compelling tale about fractured families, dislocated cultures and the hope that comes from sacrifice. It screens on Sunday, Nov. 22 at 2 p.m. at the Sechelt Seniors Centre, 5604 Trail Ave. ($5 members, $9 single event.)

Opera
On Saturday, Nov. 21 at 9:30 a.m., the Met Opera series continues live by satellite at the Raven’s Cry Theatre, Sechelt, with Lulu by Berg. Acclaimed artist and director William Kentridge applies his unique theatrical vision to Berg’s notorious femme fatale who shatters lives, including her own. The masterful score is in the sure hands of Met music director James Levine. Soprano Marlis Petersen portrays the title role in this new production. Reserve tickets at 604-885-4597.
Nutcracker
Tickets for the fourth annual production of Coasting Along Theatre Society (CATS)’s The Nutcracker go on sale to the general public Saturday, Nov. 21. Tickets can be purchased at Scotiabank in Sechelt from Nov. 21 until sold out. Or call the CATS box office at 604-989-6050 to place your ticket order. The box office staff will mail your tickets to you and, new this year, they take credit cards.
The Nutcracker will be presented at the Raven’s Cry Theatre in Sechelt. There are six performances: opening night Dec. 19 at 8 p.m., Dec. 20 and 21 at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., and Dec. 22, the final show, at 2 p.m. More about this lavish production later.
Artists support
A silent auction with all proceeds going to the Gibsons Wildlife Rehab Centre has 300-plus items including donated works of art by local artists for this worthwhile cause. It’s on Nov. 27 and Nov. 28 at Sunnycrest Mall by the Gibsons Way entrance. This year a new book is for sale, Wildlife Rehabilitation, Stories of Compassionate Care written by Rhonda Skinner, including stories from Irene Davy of the Wildlife Centre.
Stone workshop
Rock’n Art Gallery, Gibsons, will host a stone sculpting workshop for adult beginners and intermediates on the weekend of Nov. 28 and 29 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Participants will learn how to sketch, model in clay and carve their own piece made of soft stone to bring home. Instructor Don Watson has been commissioned to create multiple unique sculptures for celebrities ad collectors.
