For those who love the musical riches of the piano and string trio repertoire, performances by Trio Hochelaga are a rare treat.
Residents of Montréal (called Hochelaga by the Iroquois before 16th. C. French settlement), violinist Anne Robert, cellist Carole Sirois and pianist Marie Fabi are recognized internationally for their deft ensemble work and their exceptional musicality. Building on a friendship that goes back to their student days and following successful careers as individual performers, their collaboration in Trio Hochelaga allows them to create music that is all the more powerful and profoundly human. Of particular interest are little known and neglected musical treasures that they delight in presenting to a contemporary audience.
During the past 12 years, the Trio has combined extensive touring, including memorable concerts in Tokyo, London and Venice, with an outstanding reputation as recording artists. Reviewers frequently use the terms virtuosity, infectious enthusiasm and remarkable balance and technique to describe their perfectly fused artistry. Their recording of the Gabriel Pierné and Gabriel Fauré trios on the Atma-Classique label earned Trio Hochelaga a Choc prize the highest accolade from the French magazine Le Monde de la Musique.
See them in concert next Sunday, April 14 at 2 p.m. at the Pender Harbour School of Music. Tickets are $25 and may be purchased at Gaias Fair Trade in Gibsons, the Sechelt Visitors Centre, Harbour Insurance in Madeira Park and at John Henrys Marina in Garden Bay.
