Peanut Butter Jam rocks in winter, too

Art Beat

The Jazz Group of Seven performs at the Artesia Coffee House, Friday, Jan. 29 at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre.

The first ever winter version of Peanut Butter Jam is at the Masonic Hall in Roberts Creek on Saturday, Jan. 23, 7 p.m. to midnight. Roger Camp has been organizing these classic rock jams on the beach in Roberts Creek for the past few years, usually in summer.

As always this event is a fundraiser for the food bank. Your price of admission is peanut butter or other canned goods. Generous donations really help. Camp says that the lads in the summer prompted him to do more than one jam per year, so he thought that because the food bank gets more support at Christmas, January would be a good time for a fundraiser.

The band is part Slightly Twisted (Roger Camp, Mario Parente and Wayne Slingerland) and part the Drew Camp Band (Drew Camp, Joe Fazio and Rick Rodney). Enjoy lots of Beatles, Stones, Who and, just added, David Bowie, plus originals, about 40 songs.

Baby Harry

On Saturday, Jan. 23 Baby Harry and the Kings of Soul Band perform at the Roberts Creek Legion. Doors open at 8:30 p.m. and the music starts at 9:30 p.m. Come out and dance to guitar driven funk rock and soul.

This weekend

The Creek Big Band takes over the Gibsons Legion this Saturday at 8 p.m. to play old-time swing tunes. Members are $5, guests of members $10.

The Pender Harbour Chamber Music Festival presents three internationally acclaimed performers at the Music School in Madeira Park who will explore the legacy of Robert Schumann, Clara Schumann and Johannes Brahms. Gary Levinson, violin, and Baya Kakouberi, piano, perform this Saturday, and on Sunday they will be joined by distinguished cellist Andrés Diaz. Both concerts are at 2 p.m. Tickets are $25 at Harbour Insurance, Sechelt Visitor Centre and penderharbourmusic.ca

Jane Eyre

On Sunday, Jan. 24 at 2 p.m. the Raven’s Cry Theatre in Sechelt will screen a live by satellite performance of Jane Eyre by the National Theatre in London. Almost 170 years on, Charlotte Brontë’s story is as inspiring as ever. From her beginnings as a destitute orphan, Jane Eyre’s spirited heroine faces life’s obstacles head-on, surviving poverty, injustice and the discovery of bitter betrayal before taking the ultimate decision to follow her heart.

This acclaimed re-imagining of Brontë’s masterpiece was first staged by Bristol Old Vic last year. Director Sally Cookson now brings her celebrated production to the National Theatre. Runtime is 3:45 hours. Tickets: $15 (general/senior); $10 (student, under 18). Call the theatre at 604-885-4597 to have your tickets held.

Author reading

The first Sunday Salon, a local author’s book reading, drew a standing room only crowd last Sunday at Molly’s Seaside Market in Molly’s Lane, Gibsons. Caitlin Hicks will be reading this Sunday, Jan. 24 from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. from her acclaimed book, A Theory of Expanded Love.

Drama film

On Monday, Jan. 25, the SC Film Society presents a German/Polish film, Phoenix, by director Christian Petzold in German with English subtitles. A disfigured concentration-camp survivor, unrecognizable after facial reconstruction surgery, searches ravaged postwar Berlin for the husband she still loves, but who might have betrayed her to the Nazis. When she finds him, he does not recognize her, but proposes a devious partnership. Phoenix is a brilliant encapsulation of how people cope (or refuse to cope) with tragedy. It screens at 7:30 p.m. at the Heritage Playhouse, Gibsons.
