A chance to see inside six of the Coast's finest homes drew 175 ticket holders June 6 for the Coastal Home Tour and Tea event, a fund-raiser for the Sunshine Coast Botanical Garden Society. "An outstanding tour," was the comment from one visitor, who had begun with tea and cake at Rose Pointe Ocean House in Hopkins Landing before touring homes in the Gower Point and Bonniebrook areas, The Bluff and a farmhouse tucked away up a brambly lane in Gibsons. Among the highlights of the tour was the variety of designer kitchens, some in wood, some in marble, one in stainless steel.Clawfoot heritage bathtubs in bright, sunny bathrooms proved popular, except where owners had installed modern spa tubs in bathrooms of muted pear and sage tones. Salmonberry Lodge and Spa, on the tour circuit, had achieved a fine balance of woodworking detail. Along with the craftsman-designed window frames and moldings, the owner explained that the hardwood floor in the B&B suite was fashioned entirely from back yard trees. Happy Apple Farm, a house built primarily from recycled materials, featured fruit trees in the front yard, an old-fashioned country kitchen with new appliances and a working artist's studio on the premises. Tour organizers Patricia Hetherington, Barb Mason and Barb Marcuzzi were gratified by the turnout and hope to gain further support from the public for locating a botanical garden on the Coast.
