Outrageous women for Women’s Day

Art Beat

Three outrageous women will host an evening in celebration of International Women’s Day on Wednesday, March 8. Caitlin Hicks will be acting, reading and performing. Danika Dinsmore will present spoken word with music and Janice Williams will be entertaining the audience with her stories and wit. The event is at the Gumboot Café in Roberts Creek starting at 7 p.m. Admission is $10 (includes a $5 credit towards the purchase of food or drink). And yes, men are also welcome.

New band

Graham Ord announces a new band, Ord, Haydu and Fassaert. They will be playing their first gig at the Gumboot Café in Roberts Creek on Saturday, March 4 at 7:30 p.m. The music will include many merry melodies, lots of improvisation and some unknown factors. Ord is on saxophones, flute and a bit of synth, Sacha Fassaert is playing bass and Regan Haydu on drums. Join them for a sonic adventure.

Concert

Sunshine Coast singer-songwriters Ashley Hautala and David Taylor are playing a concert together March 4 at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre. Hautala is a young singer-songwriter from Sechelt who has been performing live over the past five years on the Coast. She sings, plays guitar and writes great songs. She has just completed her debut album Hope For Love and is excited to share her original music at this concert. Taylor is an award-winning record producer/engineer, singer/songwriter and abstract painter based in Sechelt. He will be playing some newer compositions. He has released many albums as a solo artist and with the groups Semko Fontaine Taylor, Big Cookie, Generals and Majors and DSM. Doors at 6:30 p.m.; concert at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 at the door.

Young People’s Show

Preparations are in full swing for the 2017 Gibsons Public Art Gallery’s Young People’s Art Show, In Motion. This is the eighth year of the event, which features the works of young people from around the Sunshine Coast, representing artists from age two to 18. This exhibit validates their creative work and unique points of view. Submissions are welcome from different ages and in various media, and are not juried. Every applicant who submits is assured of a place in the show. The theme is art inspired by movement: animation, film, kinetic sculpture, drawing, painting and dance.

GPAG asks young people to submit two pieces of work in any medium, to be delivered to the Gallery (431 Marine Drive, Gibsons) by Sunday, March 5 at 4 p.m. Works need to be accompanied by the entry form that can be obtained at libraries and schools, or downloaded from www.gpag.ca/submissions. All works will be exhibited from March 9 to April 2, and all participants, families and friends are invited to attend the opening party to be held at GPAG on Saturday, March 11 from 2 to 4 p.m. Dominique’s School of Dance will be performing. Children’s art

Gibsons Public Art Gallery (GPAG) announces Children’s Art Classes on March 13 to 17 with teacher Miyuki Shinkai.  Art in Motion runs from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. for ages 5 to 8; 10:45 to noon for ages 8 to 12. Film Society

The Annual General Meeting of the Sunshine Coast Film Society will be held on Monday, March 13 following the Gibsons screening of Hunt for the Wilderpeople. To be entitled to vote (or stand for office) at the AGM, you must be a member in good standing for 14 days prior to the meeting. If you aren’t sure about your membership status, please email [email protected]. The meeting is your opportunity to learn about what the film society has done over the last year.
