Opera season returns

Opera season opens this Saturday, Oct. 15, with Donizetti's Anna Bolena from the NY Metropolitan Opera, live in HD by satellite, at the Raven's Cry Theatre in Sechelt. Anna Netrebko stars as the ill-fated queen. The show starts at 9:55 a.m.

Hergott fundraiser

Tonight (Friday) at 7 p.m. stop in at the Roberts Creek Hall for the entertaining fundraiser for the Hergotts. Tickets are $20, available at Monkeychips, Laedeli and the Sechelt Visitor Info Centre. There's a silent auction and dance with Reg and Lynne Dickson who will share the stage at this event with Bits of String and The Song Butchers, to raise money for a worthy cause.

Organ recital

Organist David Millard returns to St. Hilda's in concert with the Vivaldi Chamber Choir of Vancouver and guest Sara Douglas, this Saturday at 2 p.m. Tickets are $15 and are available at the door. Proceeds from the concert will go to the Rotary International polio eradication program.

Kyprios

Live at the Lighthouse Pub in Sechelt on Saturday it's the rapping, singing, harmonizing music of Kyprios along with The Chaperones and Community Trees. Kyprios just played a sold out show in New York and you may remember his public performance during the hockey playoffs. Doors are at 9 p.m. Tickets are available for $20 at the Lighthouse liquor store or $25 at the door. For more information, call Chad at 604-399-9392.

Moonshine Express

Live funk, gypsy, soul and rock is wrapped up in Moonshine Express this Saturday at the Roberts Creek Hall at 9 p.m. Tickets are $20, available at MELOmania and the Prancing Pony Thrift Store in Gibsons.

Maser book launch

Educator and author Michael Maser launches his new book, Learn Your Way! Self Designing the Life You Really Want, at Gibsons United Church on Tuesday, Oct. 18, at 7 p.m. All are invited: students, teachers or anyone interested in good education.

Comedy

On Monday, Oct. 17, the SC Film Society presents The Trip (UK 2010), a comedy from director Michael Winterbottom. Two British comedians, Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon (playing themselves), embark on a culinary road trip through northern England. They are colourful and amusing as they enjoy the beauty of the English countryside juxtaposed against the idiosyncrasies of their egotistical personalities.

Film sponsor is Sunshine Coast Credit Union. The film screens at the Heritage Playhouse in Gibsons at 7:30 p.m.

Creative folk

Creative in the Creek, a monthly showcase of creative people, continues on Thursday, Oct. 20, at the Gumboot Café.

For the October lineup Sokole choir will sing, Joe James, Angela and Baili will perform, author Jules Andres will read, Don DeVore, inventor of eco-friendly building process gives a talk, David Roche, MC and amuser runs the show and Jan DeGrass, writer, will read from her novel, Jazz with Ella.

Doors open at 7, show time is 7:30 p.m. Admission is by donation.

Triple launch

Three authors share the stage at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre in Sechelt on Friday, Oct. 21 at 7 p.m.

Former Coast residents Kim Clark and Maureen Foss return to launch their books: Attemptations by Clark and Scribes by Foss. Esteemed local author Betty Keller re-issues her whirlwind historical novel, Better the Devil You Know. All books are from Caitlin Press. Admission is free and books will be for sale by Talewind.

Mimosa

Mimosa is playing at the Gumboot Café on Oct. 21 at 8 p.m.

The group plays on the Coast only once or twice a year, so this is a good opportunity. They will perform songs from three albums of original music, with the latest album being a nominee for the IMA awards. Hear soaring improvisations by talented saxophonist and flautist Karen Graves, great vocals by Rebecca Shoichet and drumming by the critically acclaimed, highly-in-demand Bernie Arai. It's a show guaranteed to get people toe tapping and up dancing, if space allows.
