One View Times Two at Landing Gallery

The Landing Gallery Co-op in Gibsons presents One View Times Two, a gallery member’s feature exhibition collaboration between photographer Marina Crawford and visual artist and painter Jen Drysdale. Both artists are inspired by the beauty of the Sunshine Coast’s shorelines and ocean vistas and will exhibit their own depictions of the same or similar coastal view. Most exhibition pieces by both artists are limited edition archival reproductions on canvas. The exhibition runs from Sept. 1 to 30. The Landing Gallery Co-op is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For inquiries, call 604-886-0099.

Last weekend of music

This weekend marks the closing of Music in the Landing presented by the Town of Gibsons. On Friday, Sept. 2 from 1 to 3 p.m. in Dougall Park, George Grafton and friends will present Nostalgia, songs from the ‘50s and ‘60s. Then from 7 to 8 p.m., in the Gazebo at the end of the wharf, will be Coast favourite singers/songwriters Joe Stanton and Simon Paradis. Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Pioneer Square next to the Gibsons Visitor Centre, Charlotte Wrinch, vocals/guitar, will be joined by Budge Schachte on guitar. Saturday evening 7 to 8:20 p.m. in Winegarden Waterfront Park, bring your lawn chairs and enjoy Citizen Jane, songwriter/guitarist Reenie Perkovic, and violist/fiddler Lea Kirstein. This is a new, dynamic chamber folk-pop duo who will be teaching guitar and fiddle. On Sunday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Holland Park next to the Sunday Market, it’s the Jazz Group of Seven with John Frederickson, trumpet; Carl Montgomery, alto sax; Ken Grunenberg, tenor sax; Bryan Airth, trombone; Steve Giltrow, guitar; Sacha Faessart, bass; and Tim Enns, drums.

The organizers give a big thank you to all the musicians, sponsors and countless music fans who have supported and enjoyed the 13th year of Music in the Landing.

More music

Catch the Sechelt Summer Music series by the library on Saturday, Sept. 3, with Mr. and Ms. Jeevious and Tube Radio from noon to 2 p.m. It’s free.

Marwills

The Marwills will be performing at the Roberts Creek Legion on Saturday, Sept. 3. Hear music from the golden age of rock and roll from an original band starting at 9 p.m. Ticket price for members is $10, non-members $15, at the door only.

Edwards at the Gallery

The work of Bruce Edwards is on show now in the Eve Smart Gallery at the Gibsons Public Art Gallery. From My Studio is open during gallery hours Thursday to Monday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., with admission by donation. Edwards will be giving a Fall Watercolour Workshop on Sept. 17 and 18 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Cost is $100 for the two-day workshop. An exploration of colour and design, this workshop will employ the use of watercolour and ink pen to develop strong images, suitable for journal entries, card design and frameable art. The workshop is suitable for teens and adults, beginner to intermediate level.

Bruce on Gambier

Bobby Bruce (Nearly Neil) returns to his home on Gambier Island with his band to give a sizzling end of summer performance on Sunday, Sept. 4 at the community centre. It’s family friendly fun with a noon opening, food and beverage sales, 1:30 entertainment and an opening act from the Howling Dawgs. Might be some Aussie guests on hand to entertain as well. Harvest Festival

The Botanical Garden’s annual Harvest Festival takes place on Sunday, Sept. 4. Enjoy live music by Brothers in Farms, check out the plant sale, bake sale and garlic sale, visit the demonstration veggie garden and learn new tricks for your own crops. Starts at 11 a.m. and admission is by donation at 5941 Mason Rd. in West Sechelt.

Harbour Choir

Pender Harbour Choir starts its 44th season with a new director. The choir has appointed Kenneth Norman Johnson as choir director for the coming year. He is a composer, lyricist, producer, director, conductor and educator, and is well known for his performances at various local venues and events. He has roots in the Pender Harbour community and is a supporter of a number of musical and non-musical local initiatives.

Rehearsals for the fall season begin Sept. 6 at 7 p.m. at the Pender Harbour School of Music in Madeira Park. All are welcome and no audition is required, though ability to read music is an asset. For details, call 604-883-0681.

Music Festival

This Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 3 and 4, it’s the 35th Annual Sunshine Music Festival. Expect to see world class performances in a picturesque setting at Palm Beach Park on the waterfront, this side of Powell River. Shop at the craft market and enjoy treats from many food vendors. See www.sunshine

Premiere

On Sept. 8 at 7 p.m. David Roche and Marlena Blavin of Roberts Creek will be presenting the premiere of their film, Love at Second Sight, in Vancouver at the Djavad Mowafaghian Cinema (49 W. Hastings St.). The educational video is about transforming attitudes about appearance and encouraging students to accept themselves and others. All are invited. CATS auditions

Coasting Along Theatre Society (CATS) will be holding the annual auditions for their fifth presentation of the perennial favourite ballet, The Nutcracker, at the Coast Academy of Dance in Sechelt on Sunday, Sept. 11. The Nutcracker has parts for all levels of dancers. The guest stars help coach, mentor and teach, helping the dancers of tomorrow become artists. Miguel Nguyen will return for his fifth year. He will be bringing with him his dance partner from Argentina.

“The Coast is in for a treat,” said an enthusiastic Kathleen Holmes, artistic director. Eric Burrough, Graham McMonagle and Pan Willson will also be returning as guest artists.
