The Sunshine Coast Arts Council is pleased to present a group exhibition of artists from the Sunshine Coast, Obsessions, which will be shown in the Doris Crowston Gallery at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre in Sechelt, at Trail Avenue and Medusa Street.

West My Friend
Victoria roots quartet West My Friend, recently nominated for a Vancouver Island Music Award, is not your ordinary folk band, and their Homesick Blues tour will be no ordinary tour.Travelling from Victoria to Haida Gwaii and back, West My Friend will be visiting the hometown of each member of the band.
Their performance at the Garden Bay Pub on Aug. 1 at 8 p.m. marks their first concert in the area.
Since West My Friend was conceived in a Victoria café in 2009, they've emerged as a unique voice with a sound of true Canadiana. Prior to the formation of the band, all four members moved from their home towns to study at the UVic School of Music.Described as everything from indie-roots to chamber-folk, West My Friend's acoustic blend of instruments and four-part harmonies challenges the conventions of popular music. Fibreworks
The Fibreworks Gallery near Madeira Park continues the collaborative exhibition, Drop by Drop, by Elizabeth Harris-Nichols and Catherine Nicholls on the theme of water. Singing for seniors
Macleans magazine recently featured an uplifting article, "Patricia Hammond's Sentimental Journey," about the mezzo-soprano who grew up on the Coast and studied music here before launching a musical career based in London.
In addition to performing at private and public functions, Hammond has also spent the last 12 years visiting care homes in England and singing for seniors.
Macleans writes that when she sings: "the old and the infirm, the young and the hip, all are transported."
Whenever she visits her mother, Jo Hammond, on the Coast she takes the time to visit local care residences and sing a similar program. Read about Hammond's work at www.macleans.ca (July 11).
Garage music
Acoustic artists are invited to The Garage in Gibsons (537 Veterans Rd.) on the first Thursday evenings of the month from 7 to 10 p.m. for a free get together to share songs, originals or covers. Art exhibit
Local Sunshine Coast artists Noel Silver and JoAnne Noble both have pieces being featured in the Random Acts of Queerness curated Art Exhibit as part of the Queer Arts Festival that runs July 31 to Aug. 18 in Vancouver.
For this year's theme, some artists have chosen to explore literal "random acts of queerness"- a reference to the experimental artist John Cage, to commemorate his centenary for the fifth annual festival.
The festival presents three weeks of cutting-edge performances and workshops in all artistic genres: dance, music, theatre, film, literature and visual arts. Seequeerartsfestival.comfor more information.
