Art Beat

The duo will be joined by two Vancouver authors, Adèle Barclay and Catherine Owen. Vancouver’s Anvil Press is sharing the sponsoring duties with Sunshine Coast publishers Caitlin Press and Nightwood Editions. The evening will conclude with a musical set by Governor General’s Award nominated poet Joe Denham of Halfmoon Bay.

Richard III

On Sunday, Nov. 13 at 2 p.m. the Raven’s Cry Theatre presents London Theatre in HD. The Almeida Theatre makes its live screening debut with an explosive new adaptation of Richard III with Ralph Fiennes as Shakespeare’s most notorious villain and Vanessa Redgrave as Queen Margaret. Through the malevolent Richard, Shakespeare examines the all-consuming nature of the desire for power amid a society riddled by conflict. Olivier-winning Rupert Goold (Macbeth, King Charles III) directs. Play runs 3.5 hours. Call 604-885-4597 for ticket prices.

Expressive arts

Explore self-care through expressive arts and treat yourself to a Saturday of self-care in the Community Room at the Sechelt Aquatic Centre on Nov. 12 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Register by phone 604-885-7529, in person, or online: www.scrd.ca/recreation. Shelley Harrison Rae, writer and Certified Expressive Arts Therapist, says that the intention of this course is not to produce fine art but to explore the possibilities that the arts can bring to light. Practise a variety of expressive arts exercises, learn simple tools for stress reduction and experience self-expression without judgment.

Poynter and Clancy

The Gibsons Public Art Gallery (GPAG) presents The Longview, an exhibition by Jan Poynter from now until Dec. 4. In parallel, in the Eve Smart Gallery is The Art of Being There, an exhibition by Paul Clancy. All are welcome at the opening reception: Saturday, Nov. 12 from 2 to 4 p.m. Poynter will be In Residence at GPAG, at her easel, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 13.

Green Film Series

The Green Film Series presents the highly acclaimed film Angry Inuk on Nov. 14 in Gibsons and Nov. 16 in Sechelt.

A new generation of Inuit, armed with social media and their own sense of humour and justice, are challenging the anti-sealing groups and bringing their own voices into the conversation.

Filmmaker and director Alethea Arnaquq-Baril joins her fellow Inuit activists as they dissolve outdated perceptions of Inuit and present themselves to the world as a modern people in dire need of a sustainable economy.

The screening in Gibsons will be at the Heritage Playhouse Monday, Nov. 14 at 7:30 p.m. and in Sechelt at the SC Art Centre on Wednesday, Nov. 16, at 7:30 p.m. Admission is by donation at the door (suggested $10). For more information, see greenfilms.ca

Young artist awards

Creative kids are wanted for a special annual event produced by the Sunshine Coast Arts Council. Artists, aged five to 18, who take photos, build, carve, sew, draw, paint or do other art in their spare time are invited to enter the Young Artists Awards. Work created outside of school programs in the past year should be entered by 3 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 20. The young artists work will be exhibited in the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre from Nov. 30 to Dec. 17. For full details and an entry form, see sunshinecoastartscouncil.com

Archie Fisher

Scottish singer/songwriter/music producer Archie Fisher performs at the Pender Harbour School of Music in Madeira Park on Sunday, Nov. 20 at 2 p.m. An unassuming man, his solo work and collaborations with U.K. stars such as Liam Clancey and Tommy Makem and, in Canada, with Nova Scotia fiddler Garnet Rogers, have placed him among the greats of world folk music. This will be Fisher’s third visit to Pender Harbour.  Tickets are $25 at penderharbourmusic.ca, Harbour Insurance in Madeira Park and Sechelt Visitor Centre.

Stone sculpting

Rock’N Art Gallery Gibsons is hosting a popular weekend workshop for adult beginners and intermediates: Stone Sculpting Weekend Workshop on Nov. 19 and 20 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Learn how to sculpt with internationally established sculptor Don Watson using soft soapstone that anybody can carve. NFB films

In conjunction with Sunshine Coast Welcoming Communities, Gibsons Public Art Gallery presents National Film Board Film Night on Thursday, Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. with the film In Canada by Michael Morein, featuring personal stories and experiences of diverse immigrants to Canada. Also screening: Welcoming Communities, the première of a promotional video, the story of Welcoming Communities, with testimonials from clients, students, tutors and community partners. Crawl stats

The Art Crawl held their wrap up meeting in Halfmoon Bay and announced the numbers reported so far. Though there are still a few left to report, the stats show visits to studios and sales have again increased: 35,000 studio visits, up from 27,000 in 2015. Sales were $266,000 up from $220,000 in 2015. Add to that a large number of commissions, $30,000-plus, many more purchases after the weekend and workshops filling from sign-ups. Sunshine Coast artists are recognized and have become a strong economic driver in our community. Visitors came from all over, from Vulcan, Alberta to Noisy-le-roi, France.

New directors

The Sunshine Coast Arts Council held its Annual General Meeting recently and the following have been elected to the board of directors: Nell Burns (returning), Tim Clement (returning), Lynn Grossutti (returning), Sue Carson, Kathleen Hughes, Ian MacLeod and Tara Davies.
