Meet the author

Meet author Dorothy Riddle at Woods Showcase in Sunnycrest Mall this Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m. Riddle has published two books, Principles of Abundance for the Cosmic Citizen and Positive Harmlessness in Practice.

Arts Building

The Arts Building on South Fletcher in Gibsons is open for its third season with new classes for all ages including a drawing salon for youth and do-it-yourself, project-based classes and art. Adult classes in painting, permaculture and art, life drawing, and photography are also offered.

This Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. is a kite-making workshop for all ages using tyvek, wood and sewing. Cost is $10 each or $15 for a family. For more information on all the classes, see www.artsbuilding.org or call 604-740-7790.

Recital

An organ recital at St. Hilda's Anglican Church in Sechelt featuring musician Matthew Cron is Saturday night at 7 p.m.

In May 2004, Cron completed his doctorate in musicology from Brandeis University. He has taught at several universities including Harvard and the New England Conservatory of Music. As a performer, he has served as organist and music director of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Amherst, Massachusetts since 1989. He has performed on organ, harpsichord, piano, recorder, cornetto and natural trumpet in a variety of venues and plays music from the Middle Ages to the 21st century. Admission is by donation.

Hospice Music

New-to-the-Coast composer and pianist Kenneth Johnson and Sunshine Coast hospice co-ordinator Sherryl Latimer decided to work together to co-ordinate benefit concerts for the Sunshine Coast Hospice Society.

The concerts, Black & White with a Touch of Colour, will feature the original lyrics and compositions of Johnson and his hand-picked orchestra including Kelly Smit, Esme McLaughlin-Brooks, Simon Gidora, Oliver Gidora and Peter Williams, as well as guest artists, mezzo soprano Nikki Barker, tenor Edmund Arceo, and dancers Tarah Kalman and Sacha Kalman. Proceeds from the concert will go towards grief support programs for adults and children as well as additional training for hospice volunteers.

The concerts are Sept. 30 in Gibsons, Oct. 1 in Sechelt and Oct. 2 in Pender Harbour.

Film Society

Nostalgia for the Light is a Chilean documentary by director Patricio Guzman in Spanish with English subtitles; it is the next SC Film Society event on Monday, Sept. 26, at 7:30 p.m. at the Heritage Playhouse in Gibsons. Ticket prices are $5 members, and single event $8. ?

Live Poets

The Gibsons Live Poets Society is pleased to announce its fall line-up of poets. Four poets will be reading starting this Saturday with Patricia Young kicking off the series. Born in Victoria, where she still lives, the poet is the author of nine collections of poetry and one of short fiction. Twice short-listed for the Governor General's Award, she has won numerous awards for her fiction and poetry.

Matt Rader will read on Sept. 30, Steven Heighton on Oct. 16 and Gillian Wig-more on Oct. 24.See more athttp://gibsonspoets.ca.

All are welcome to attend these free readings sponsored by Canada Council for the Arts and the League of Canadian Poets. All readings take place at Wheatberries Bakery/Bistro at 7 p.m. Books will be available for sale.

Chorus open house

The Arbutus Sounds Chorus is having an open house on Tuesday, Sept. 27, at 7 p.m. at the Davis Bay Community Hall.Any women interested in singing a cappella harmony in the barbershop style are invited to come see what the chorus is about. Light refreshments will be served.

Art exhibit

Still Life in Vancouver, photography by Gibsons resident Marina Crawford, is still showing at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre's Doris Crowston Gallery until Oct. 2. Hours are Wednesday to Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m.

House concert

Musician Kieran Halpin's Around the World in 80 Days tour stops in Roberts Creek for one night at the Laws house on Sept. 29 at 7 p.m.

Since 1979, Halpin has recorded 18 albums and published two songbooks. He is a successful songwriter whose songs have been covered by many well-known artists and performed in clubs, pubs and concert halls throughout the world.

Nostalgia dance

Don't miss a fabulous evening of vocalists and professional dancers celebrating the hits of the 1950s and 60s in Night of Nostalgia on Friday, Sept. 30.

George Grafton's production will showcase some of the best vocal talent on the Coast including Jim Taylor and Owen Paillot, including The Nostalgettes (Wendy Campbell, Nicole Schroeder, Joy Germaine and Jan Gillis) who will provide harmony as well as solos. It all takes place at the former Club venue in Lower Gibsons.

Doors and cash bar open at 6:30 and the show starts at 7 p.m. Only 120 tickets are available and can be purchased at Zocalo in Gibsons Landing for $20.

Comedy night?

The Gumboot Restaurant place was packed last Saturday and the contestants were pretty funny for the comedy contest organized by Jenica Vaneli who hosted the evening in her 1970s outfit. After an evening of five-minute acts, Terri Bosner, better known as a poet, ranted her way to first place with a well-polished andtimed act, winning a spot at Yuk Yuks with tickets for four friends. Second and hot out of the kitchen of the Gumboot was Maxwell Edwardswho won $100 cash from flycoastal.ca. Ryan Peters who also ended the show on a hilarious note won third place and dinner for two. Watch for more comedy nights in the future.
