New date for coffeehouse

There is a very special line-up with the return from Winnipeg of Diana Halter on harp and vocals, and the last local performance before they leave for a six-month stay in Montrealof the jazz duo Anagram, Graham Ord, sax, flute and percussion and Anna Lumiere on grand piano. The second set will feature singer/songwriter Katherine Penfold and Lumiere on piano. This duo was a hit at the Gibsons Landing Jazz Festival and people wanted more.

Come early and enjoy treats by Trish and the new art show in the Doris Crowston Gallery. Tickets are $10 at the door.The coffeehouse will return to its regular last Friday of the month again in January. More information is at: www.suncoastarts.com.

This weekend

Heroes, a presentation by the Driftwood Players, has opened at the Heritage Playhouse in Gibsons and offers one show tonight, Friday, Nov. 8 and a matinee and evening show tomorrow, Saturday. Tinselinda

Bella Burnett is creating a puppet show at the Gumboot Cafe this Saturday, Nov. 9 at 2 p.m.with the title of Tinselinda in the Winda.

Ballet

On Sunday, Nov. 10 theRoyal London Ballet presents Don Quixote at the Raven's Cry Theatre, Sechelt at 2 p.m.

Young Artist Awards

Do you have a young artist in the family? If so, why not encourage them to take part in the Young Artist Show.

Every year, the Sunshine Coast Arts Council invites young people aged 5 to 18 who love to do art at home to submit three of their original works for exhibit in the Doris Crowston Gallery in Sechelt.

All forms of visual arts are welcome, including constructions, sculptures, fibre arts, photography, videos, painting, and whatever else young artists may create.

All entries submitted by 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 30 will be exhibited from Dec. 4 to 15, with a reception for the artists and their parents being held at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 15. Certificates will be presented to all the artists and special recognition for outstanding work will be presented in four age categories.

Art classes

Bruce Edwards is conducting limited enrollment art classes on Fridays in his Roberts Creek home studio. The watercolour class is filled, but there is still one opening for Saturday's session from 1 to 3 p.m. and a few openings for the Tuesday evening class from 7 to 9 p.m. These sessions are a lot of fun. Bookfest

Bookfest is a night of readings, games and book prizes.

Enjoy readings by 10 exceptional Sunshine Coast published writers punctuated by an interlude of fun, games and book prizes masterminded by the inimitable Andreas Schroeder. Readings by: Jan DeGrass, Gwen Southin, Rosella Leslie, Joe Denham, Eric Paetkau, Jancis Andrews, Rebecca Hendry, Susan Telfer, Maureen Foss, Peter Robson, next Friday, Nov. 15, at 7 p.m. in the Doris Crowston Gallery at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre in Sechelt. Admission is $5.

It's a fundraiser for the Sunshine Coast Arts Council and is sponsored by the Quintessential Writers Group.

Drama classes

Driftwood Theatre School is offering a six-week teen and adult drama class with renowned actor/director/performer John Conway (a.k.a. The Green Man). Conway's love of theatre and his infectious energy are sure to inspire experienced and novice alike. Classes run Nov. 14 to Dec. 19 from 7 to 8 p.m. at St. Bart's Hall in Gibsons. JavaJazz

After a successful show last year, JavaJazz, a vocal sextet under the direction of Karen Edgar, will be having an evening of easy-listening smooth jazz music next Saturday, Nov. 16 at the Arts Centre in Sechelt at 7 p.m.

Accompanying will be Walter Martella on piano, Ron Thompson on guitar and Al Burns on drums. Special guests will be Katherine Penfold, Sha-Boom and Robyn Edgar. Tickets are $20 and they include refreshments and the chance to win some great door prizes.Tickets are available at the Seaside Centre in Sechelt or call Karen 604-885-4342.
