Music Makers sing out

The Music Makers Celebration of Song is this Saturday, May 10, at 7 p.m. at St. John’s United Church in Davis Bay.

This year they will feature the family and adult choirs, Guitar Gang, Definitely Diva and Reg and Lynne. Tickets are $15, available at Gaia’s Fair Trade, MELOmania and the Sechelt Visitors Centre.

Laugh tonight
Comedy Night with amuser David Roche is on tonight (May 9) at 8 p.m. at the Roberts Creek Legion. Laugh, Laugh, Laughin’ at Heaven’s Door costs $5 for members, $10 for guests. Enjoy Roche’s heavenly dark humour.

Sound open house
The Sound studio in Sechelt, a place for music, lessons and recording, is celebrating its third anniversary by having an open house party on May 10 from 2 to 4 p.m. The Sound studio is upstairs at 5538 Wharf Avenue in Sechelt.

Cobain tribute
The recent 20th anniversary of the death of Nirvana guitarist and songwriter Kurt Cobain prompted many musicians and fans to pay tribute, and this Saturday, May 10, local musician Steve Weave will be joined by Jeff Doran and Jamie Swann from Robotic Horse Mechanical Sun for a feel good acoustic show of ‘90s classics, performing songs by Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Sinead O’Connor and many more.

This special event is happening at Ty’s Bistro. There are limited tickets available for $12 in advance. Ty’s is located at 5500 Trail Avenue in Sechelt.

Magic show
Jozef the magician and Bibiana the floating lady are returning to the Sunshine Coast next week. She disappeared in smoke during their last appearance, but will reappear at the Davis Bay Community Hall on Tuesday, May 13, at their 7 p.m. show. There is a second show in Gibsons on Saturday, May 17, at 7 p.m. at the Heritage Playhouse. Tickets will be available at the door of both venues and also in advance at Laedeli Gifts and Cards in Sunnycrest Mall in Gibsons. The show features hours of magic for the whole family and is the last traditional travelling magic show in Canada.

Book prizes
The BC Book Prizes on May 3 awarded honours to two Douglas & McIntyre titles. The Roderick Haig-Brown Regional Prize that recognizes the author of the book that contributes most to the enjoyment and understanding of British Columbia went to David Stouck for Arthur Erickson: An Architect’s Life. Stouck also won the Hubert Evans Non-Fiction prize for the same work.

Douglas & McIntyre is now owned by Harbour Publishing. Raconteur and radio host Grant Lawrence was awarded the Bill Duthie Booksellers’ Choice Award for The Lonely End of the Rink: Confessions of a Reluctant Goalie. Both Lawrence and Howard White, publisher of Douglas & McIntyre, were there to accept the award.

Celtic music
The 14th annual Sunshine Coast School of Celtic Music, July 7 to 12, is now open for registration. See www.coastcelticmusic.com to learn more about a line-up of tutors from across Canada and Scotland who will offer classes in fiddle, cello, guitar, piano, folk choir and youth Trad Band for all instruments (ages 15 to 25).

The spectacular gala concert is at Rockwood Pavilion in Sechelt, on July 11 at 7 p.m. with tickets going on sale in June. Also for the first time the Trad Band will be doing a concert at Music in the Landing on July 12 and in Madeira Park on Sunday, July 13, at 2:30 p.m. at the new outdoor classroom.

Fundraiser
Sunshine Coast Community Song Circles is seeking quality donations for a fundraising rummage sale on Saturday, May 31.

Funds will provide basic living expenses and tuition for two students in Kenya who are completing university in Nairobi. The aim is to raise $1,300. Contact Sue at 604-886-9290 or Judy at 604-886-7334 to arrange for drop-off (no clothing, please) or to make a cash donation.
 
Quilt trip
Travel with the Sunshine Coast Quilt Guild to the world’s largest outdoor quilt show in Sisters, Ore. They will be travelling from July 9 to 13 and plan several stops on the way: Fabric Depot, Portland; Pike’s Market, Seattle; Mount Vernon, Wash.; Olympia, Wash.; and Bend, Ore. Price for the trip is $600 members; $625 non-members. This includes accommodation, transportation, breakfasts and meals.
