Scott Cook with Rakish Angles
Scott Cook and the Second Chances with local musicians the Rakish Angles perform at the Heritage Playhouse in Gibsons on Saturday, July 7 at 8 p.m.
Cook has distilled the stories collected over a decade touring into straight-talking, keenly observant verse with lots of banjos, mandolins, bass and harmonies. In 2017 he released his sixth studio album, Further Down the Line. Cook still believes that songs can change your life, and your life can change the world.
The Rakish Angles – Sara Fitzpatrick (violin, vocals), Simon Hocking (mandolin, vocals), Boyd Norman (bass, vocals) and Dan Richter (guitar, vocals) – have been crafting their own novel, ageless sound since 2007. Their music spans newgrass, Latin, gypsy-jazz, old-time music, and altogether new territory, and the feeling comes through the loudest.
Tickets are $20 at WOW Gallery, Gibsons, and MELOmania, Roberts Creek. Magic or your money back!

She has a BA in Fine Arts (Israel) and a PhD in clinical psychology specializing in Jungian dream work (Canada). Summer Ballet
Since 2009, the Holmes Summer Ballet Workshops have been teaching and coaching dancers. Kathleen Holmes, the artistic director of Coasting Along Theatre Society (producers of The Nutcracker) and a ballet teacher at the Coast Academy of Dance, looks forward to these workshops every year. This year the summer session is offered from July 9 to 14. You never know who will drop in for class. Erin McNeill came by a few summers ago and gave the dancers a chance to work with a current professional ballerina who had performed the Sugar Plum Fairy for The Nutcracker for two seasons and has just completed a contract with Ballet UK. Saturday, July 14 is a full day beginning with a master class taught by Eric Burrough and Konstantin Keshyshev, two professional male dancers and teachers who were guest artists with The Nutcracker. They will coach variations and pas de deux. The session last year was a huge success – female students learned a bit about partnering, and fathers gained more respect for their daughters. “We make it look so easy and graceful on stage,” Holmes said. “They had no idea how tough it was.” The Saturday workshop is open to everyone.
