Music in the Landing

Janet Grohovac and Chad Ibison will perform a classical guitar concert on Sunday, July 31 at 2 p.m. at Living Faith Lutheran Church in Davis Bay.

This Friday, July 29, from 7 to 8 p.m. in the gazebo at the end of the Gibsons wharf, give new residents Ken Dunn and Anna Green a Sunshine Coast welcome and listen to their original folk-oriented “acoustic music to quench the thirsty soul.”

Saturday is a double bill of Daves at Pioneer Square with Dave Roughley at 11 a.m. and Dave Philley at noon. The 7 to 8:45 p.m. show in Winegarden Waterfront Park will feature another Coastal favourite band, Tube Radio: Brett Fitzsimmons, vocals/guitar; Andrew Bate, drums; Garry McGuire, vocals/guitar; Boyd Norman, vocals/bass; and Ian McLatchie, steel guitar. Sunday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the Sundial Stage next to the Sunday Market, listen to tunes from Jack & G (Steve Jack and G Willy).

An annual special for Music in the Landing will include a BC Day show from 1 to 2:30 p.m. in Winegarden Park. Bring your lawn chairs and blankets to enjoy an afternoon of blues from the Steve Hinton Band with Hinton on guitar/harmonica, Tim Renard, drums, Sully Anconyk, bass, and Al Alford on guitar.

Harmony Arts

Coast artist Brian Romer will once again be part of the Showcase Exhibition at West Vancouver’s Harmony Arts Festival that begins this coming weekend (July 29 to Aug. 7). His work is in the Ferry Building Gallery at Ambleside Landing and the opening reception is this Friday, July 29 at 6 p.m. The art show runs for a week beyond the festival, until Sunday, Aug. 14.

Tragically Hip tribute

Steve Weave plays an acoustic tribute to Gord Downie and the Tragically Hip on Saturday, July 30 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Persephone Beer Farm in Gibsons. Come celebrate the music and share memories of the band while singing along to some classic Hip songs. The concert is free; tips are much appreciated. This event will be streamed live on YouTube.

Gambier Fair

On Saturday, July 30 visitors are welcome to the Gambier Summer Family Fair. (Take the passenger ferry from Langdale to Gambier Island.) There are lots of events: crafts, pie contest, kids games, kids races, face painting, live and silent auction, cupcake walk and 50/50 draw. The day goes from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Gambier Community Hall, a short uphill walk from the ferry.

Classical guitar

The Grohovac-Ibison Duo, Janet Grohovac and Chad Ibison, have been performing together since 2010, based in Austin, Texas. They will perform a classical guitar concert with works by Rodrigo, Tedesco and Britten on Sunday, July 31 at 2 p.m. at Living Faith Lutheran Church, 4607 Whitaker Rd. in Davis Bay. Both Grohovac and Ibison pursued their Doctorate of Musical Arts degrees specializing in guitar performance at the University of Texas in Austin where Grohovac graduated in 2014 and Ibison most recently in May 2016. Tickets are $20 at the door.

Rod Run

The ever popular Sleepy Hollow Rod Run takes place on Friday, Aug. 5, and this year there’s a new, fun competition for spectators organized by the Coasters Car Club. If you are a roadside spectator you can enter your enthusiastic group in the contest, especially if they like to dress in fun themed costumes for the run. Motoko’s new work

Garden Bay artist Motoko has new work on display this summer. View her original work and enjoy the ambience of her studio and fine art gallery, open daily through July and August from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 4590 Sinclair Bay Rd. in Pender Harbour. The new show of latest work runs until Aug. 14 with an opening reception on Saturday, Aug. 6 from 2 to 5 p.m. 

Landing Gallery

The Landing Gallery at 436 Marine Dr. in Gibsons opens a new feature exhibition, See the Sea, for the month of August. This show, a collaboration between pastel artist Ruth Rodgers and fibre artist Nell Burns, features small works with an aquatic theme. Nell’s exquisite three-dimensional embroideries in shades of blue complement Ruth’s new series of bright pastels of kids on the beach. The opening reception, Saturday, Aug. 6 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. will include a presentation by Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society on the status of the endangered glass sponge reef off the Sunshine Coast. All are invited.

Book launch

Doug Ingold and Nina Haedrich would like to invite friends, acquaintances and literature lovers to join them in celebrating the publication of Ingold’s new book Rosyland: A Novel in III Acts. The party will take place at the Arts Centre in Sechelt, on Saturday, Aug. 6 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. The author will read from his work, discuss the novel and his writing process and respond to questions. Rosyland, Doug’s fourth novel, is a literary thriller set in San Francisco and environs. Snacks and beverages will complement the evening and Bev from Talewind Books will grace the book table. Ingold divides his time between the Redwood Coast of northern California and the Sunshine Coast of B.C. His previous works are In the Big City, The Henderson Memories and SQUARE.
