Described as a captivating singer, Barb Elyett is a contemporaryChristian recording artist, speaker, award-winning songwriter andfour time Maja Music Award nominee that is making a name for herselfin Canadian Christian music. On Friday, Oct. 2, she will be performing at St. Hilda's by the Sea Anglican Church in Sechelt at 7:30 p.m., and on Saturday, Oct. 3, at St. Bartholomew's Anglican Church in Gibsons at 7:30 p.m. Both events will highlight songs from her new album, The Simple Side.

Both concert events are free so bring your friends. (An optional free will offering will be collected).

This weekend

It's piano night tonight at the season's first Artesia coffee house with four great performers at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre in Sechelt. Doors open at 7 p.m.

The Wild Bistro in Gibsons presents the opening of an exhibit by digital artist Eric Drane with appropriate music from Sinmobile. See www.wildbistro.com for more.

The New Moon Festival runs from 1 p.m. to dark in Dougall Park in Gibsons on Saturday. Performances include a Lion dance, Japanese drumming, Asian hip hop, East Indian dancers and the show continues through the evening with a lantern procession and Mind of a Snail Shadow Puppet show.

Reading series

Winnipeg writer David Bergen will read at 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26 at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre in Sechelt. His latest, critically acclaimed novel is The Retreat.

Subsequent writers in the Arts Centre's fall series include MaryRubio, whose books on L.M. Montgomery include the biography LucyMaude Montgomery: The Gift of Wings. Rubio's reading takes place Saturday, Oct. 17, followed by Ivan Coyote, performer and author offour short story collections, who reads Saturday, Nov. 7. MargaretHorsfield, whose latest book is Voices From the Sound: Chronicles of Clayoquot Sound and Tofino 1899-1929, reads Saturday, Nov. 28.

Thereading series is sponsored by the Canada Council for the Arts andthe Sunshine Coast Arts Council. Admission is free and donations welcome.

Film Society

The film Fugitive Pieces will screen on Monday, Sept. 28, 7:30 p.m. at the Gibsons Heritage Playhouse. Annual membership to the society is $12.

Single event costs $8. Doors open at 7 p.m. This screening is sponsored by Bonniebrook Lodge and Chasters Dining. Lina Jacobs will be there to invite filmgoers to a film and dinner evening at Chasters on Oct. 5 when the Film Society will be screening Cherry Blossoms. See www.scfs.ca for more.

Popular duo

You might recall that musicians David Essig and Rick Scott had to postpone their Double Vision tour to the Coast last spring. Scott has finally recovered from his arm injury and the two will perform on Oct. 3 in Halfmoon Bay at a house concert. Doors at 7.; show 8 p.m. for $20. They play again on Oct. 4 at the Heritage Playhouse. Doors 7 p.m.; show 7:30. Tickets are $20 at Wild Bistro and Gaia's Fair Trade in Gibsons, WindSong Gallery in Sechelt and at the door.

Each a highly celebrated solo performer, Essig and Scott combine guitar, dulcimer and vocal harmonies in finely crafted songs of life, love and loss seasoned with literate wit and considerable kindness. Tickets will probably go quickly for this popular duo.

Awards

Sept. 30 is the deadline to nominate a special person to the three awards presented by the Sunshine Coast Arts Council. The Gillian Lowndes Award honours a Coast artist active in any discipline. The Louise Baril Award is for music students and the Anne and Philip Klein Award is for artists who found their art later in life. For an application form see www.scartscouncil.com.

Band battle

Pack Ratt Louie's Battle of the Bands got under way last Wednesday, Sept 23. Four bands went head to head to find the best on the Sunshine Coast. Week one saw The People, Jump Back Jack, Get Away and The Small Town Heroes do battle. Each week, one band will be eliminated. Voting is half and half, patrons and judges.

Next Wednesday, Sept 30 starting at 7 p.m. Probable Cause, The Copper Stills and Cemetery Road begin their journey to stardom. Come out to the restaurant in Sunnycrest Mall and cheer on your favourite band.

Fundraiser

On Oct. 3 there will be a fundraising hip hop performance at the Roberts Creek Hall in support of Arrowhead. This event is presented as an effort to reach the vast age range of this community. The performers are The Ground Breakers, a group of six guys from Vancouver who have been performing at numerous venues throughout B.C. for the last two years. Tickets are $18 and are on sale at Wind Song Gallery, Sechelt, MELOmania, Roberts Creek, Gaia's Fair Trade, Gibsons.They cost $20 at the door.
